Title: Mark M's EA Boost
Post by: sixstringphil on February 02, 2008, 01:25:25 AM
Anyone ever built one of these? It's the preamp section of the ROG EA Tremolo. I just finished one and was debating on putting it in a box. The only other boost I have to compare it to is the beginner NPN boost. Anyone else tried it?

I've made 3 EA Trems...and as is usual for FETs...each sounded a bit different.
But when it's *right*...it RAWKS!
I changed the switching so that the boost is always on...even when the trem is off.
So...I'd suggest a socket & try a bunch...using a trimmer for bias.

Er....ya know...ain't that front end a MOSFET designed by Gez?
I may have posted before using the brain....DUH!
The boost sounds great.
It's the trem that varies because of the JFET.

And now (sheesh...I swear I'm not under the influence!)...to the point:  I've not made Gus's boost...but I may eventually because I really respect him.  A MOSFET boost is very clean...and has a *sparkle* to it...because the high impedence lets ALL your tone come thru.
An LPB has a lower impedence...so it darkens your tone somewhat.  Jack's mini-booster has a some *hair* to it.  Bottom line: each has it's own *personality* and only YOUR ears can decide what you prefer.

Yes, Gez's mosfet design is much cleaner than the original EA circuit. I've only tried 2N2222s in the NPN, and it does break up a little, but it's nice.
I like to use my tremolo after comps & distortions, so the EA in my board is internally adjusted to a non-boosted output.
