Title: Whats a good wah pot to get for a V847?
Post by: enigmur on April 09, 2008, 02:36:05 AM
Hey all,

I've done a lot of mods to my V847 now, but I havent been able to find the sweet spot for sweep. I have a hot potz 2 in it at the moment and I really don't like the sweep at all. I was fixing my friends wah and it has a beautiful sweep on it.

I've been looking around but I'd like to get some ideas.

Where can I go online to buy a good wah pot which ships worldwide.
I've checked out a couple, does anyone know if smallbear's 100k black bear ICAR pot is any good? I've heard the Fulltone is really nice, but I've only seen it for like 25euros which is quite a lot for a pot.

Could I please get some suggestions as to brands and shops.

Cheerrs!

I know of a couple of places where you can get the fulltone pot for less than 25 euros, more around 25 to 30 or so dollars. But, I had heard so many negative things about the Fulltone that I just didnt want to spend that kind of money for something that I wasn't very sure about. In fact, I also found a place to get a fulltone inductor for around $30, but again, there are other options that people have given high regards (Whipple). Now to the recommendations, I actually just bought a smallbear black bear 100k ICAR pot basically because many forum members have said it is great and not that expensive; mine will be coming in the mail soon, and when I install it I will tell you how it is.

The fulltone ( and the small bear ICAR I believe ) has a very sharp taper. The wah sweep will be very pronounced and very quick in a small area. It works well for using a wow (forward then back) than a wah sound ( just one direction.) If your very aggresive with the wah back and forth it can get clicky sounding.

I've tried a couple different black bear pots and they all have gotten really scratchy almost immediately  ???   :icon_sad:  I don't know if its just me but they start off sounding great. I love the taper on em, and then they all get really scratchy. So much so that I can't even bring myself to use them.  I already sent one back to Steve and he sent me another now this one is scratchy and so I had to pull it.  I put that shotty hot pot 2 back in and upped the .22uf going to the pot wiper to a .33uF which helped the taper a bit.  Maybe I'll have to try the fulltone cause I have had no luck with the black bear.  Perhaps I can clean it though, I try and report back.

Ive been looking at the Blacktop Pot that Ive seen on ebay...they guy that makes the Whipple Wah inductors sells them.

I'm not a "wah guy", but I'm looking at building a nice Clyde Wah clone with some of the NOS parts I have around here, so Ive been looking at pots and inductors lately...

I just bought one of the pots this guy sells (and the inductor).

This guy is absolutley the best to deal with, superfriendly and I have never dealt with a better seller. I cannot evaluate the pot yet since I haven't gotten it yet. The price is right also and i've heard good stuff about the pot.

Hey, you can't use it on the beach!
Maybe looks identical but are they the same? Did you try some electronics spray on your pots?

I have heard, and read, as wah modding threads are ubiquitous here, that many of the ICAR pots sold are the same, the smallbear, the area51, probably that whipple one. the fulltone is different, and the teese one is different. i also read somewhere that there was a bad batch of the icar pots that smallbear sells, i really hope mine doesn't get scratchy fast.

Edit: I suggest that you be confident with a smallbear purchase, as Steve is a good guy to deal with.

Steve tells me that the reason the Black Bears are getting scratchy is because of the lubricant used in them.  I just took one apart and cleaned it out.  The lubricant is a thick grease.  I used a paper towel with wd40 to clean it off we'll see how that works.  I'll put it through it's paces for the next few days and report back.  Steve said that he talked to the supplier about the issue and requested a batch w/out lubricant.  So hopefully that will clear up any further issues.
