Title: raspy with vol. rolled off
Post by: drewl on October 31, 2008, 09:06:49 AM
So I put together a 3 knob Bender and it's sounding pretty good, alot like clips I've found however when I turn the guitars volume down the sound starts cutting out and it sounds raspy, or sputtery for lack of better terms.
The fuzz loses all it's good sound qualities.
Sorry if this has been covered, any ideas or threads to look to?
Thanks.

Hmmm......None of the FuzzFaces I built or Tonebender MKII behave this way, but if this is normal then that's the way it is.
More experimentation is needed.

Pinouts, bias, leakage (if germanium).

That's where I'd start.  I'd be particularly interested in Q1 and Q2.

Rings the 'bias bell' for me...what's the bias on the FF circuit, and the first boost stage while you're at it.

After playing around with it, it seems the Germanium diode is the culprit.
I put a silicon diode on the base of Q3 and it's tracking smoothly at any input signal from the guitar.
The tone seems pretty much the same, I'll try another Ge diode if I can find one.
