Title: capacitor prices, buy cheap?
Post by: kvb on November 02, 2008, 05:48:48 PM
shopping at Mouser for some .1u general purpose caps.

I do not remember what I paid some time ago for the yellow boxes, but the prices I see make me wonder . . .

1.Do the prices of components go up and down throughout the year, or is the price fixed at the beginning of the fiscal year?

2.And, what is your opinion when it comes to buying components? The cheapest wins?

I ask because AVX has .1u 100V 5% caps for 9 cents while the usual 50V of many other manufacturers are going for nearly 10-15 cents more. At 50 parts or so it starts to make a big difference.

I'd appreciate your feedback.

I buy the box AVX from Mouser, usually the 63V. I've never had any reliability issues with them....love em. Whether or not any of the others (Wima) "sound" better, I couldn't tell you.

i buy based on size, then price, then aesthetics.

i love the look/size of the wima .33uf/100v cap and i use it for the input cap on almost all of my pedals.  a good price too, if i remember correctly...

Thanks

Does anybody know if AVX is a new company or something?

Are their caps so much cheaper because they are trying to attract new customers?

(wima .33u 50V- 100V $0.33 - $0.95  not in that order)   Definitely not buying 50 at $0.95
(wima .1u for 25 cents or so) still more than double the AVX
