I had an idea last night for a new type of contest. Essentially, a forum member posts a sound clip using a certain effect (or effects). The person who guesses what effect(s) are being used in the soundclip wins. It would be required that any submitters provide information about all equipment being used to record the clip (aside from effects, of course ;)). We could work out some sort of reward system as well, maybe I'll send out an RC4558 to the winner. What do you guys think?
Sounds good to me! Bonus points if you can guess the settings :icon_wink:
When I was an undergrad, my room-mate and I used to play something we called "the baby food game". We'd go to the supermarket aisle where they kept the baby food. One guy would turn around or hide his eyes, and the other one would select two jars of babyfood. The first guy had to guess what they were while the second guy covered up the label, showing only the bottomof the jar.
Sometimes strained peaches looks just like turkey and carrots. Sometimes that rice pudding turned out to be lamb and potatoes. Sometimes unusual sounds can be made by the most familiar of pedals, and the most outlandish things can sound surprisingly normal. :icon_wink:
Sure, I'll bite.
Sounds like fun to me.
Interesting. I'm in.
Free to try and comes with a prize? Count me in! 8)
Sounds fun, Id love to play!
Gives me something to do with all these damn little boxes.
I'm in too! Sounds fun!

Hoodlums.
Effect or effects... Man, it's gonna be difficult and funny.
I am reinstalling my soundcard !
Alright, I'll post the first. This is a soundclip that's been sitting on my desktop forever so that's pretty convenient! First you'll hear a clean sound, then the "secret" effect kick in. This one is pretty easy IMO.
Setup is as follows:
Guitar: Japanese Pan Les Paul copy (except bolt on neck), setup for slide playing (brass slide here). Pickups are from a Charvel Fusion Deluxe and, if I recall correctly, it's using both the neck and the bridge pickup. There is a JFET pre built into the guitar as well.
Amp: 1954 Silvertone 6 Watt beast, Model 1331
There are no mastering effects aside from some slight compression and as I remember, the mic's were an AKG C3000B, SM57 and a Behringer set a good deal away (ambient mic).
Here is the clip:

Good luck!
Hm... pretty raunchy. A bit of amp distortion also. Big Muff?
Very nice playing, to me it sounds something like a fuzz face / big muff transistor type distortion.
It is a high-gain "clean" boost of some type. I say this because there is an unfocussed aspect to the sound. I don't say "unfocussed" in a disparaging sense. Rather, the tone is not aiming for any sonic signature in particular, the way that an "effect" pedal would. As a result, the sound you hear is the sound of an amp going "Jeez!! I can't handle this!", and doing a bunch of different things in response. Moreover, a straight clean boost would also contain a fair amount of treble content, simply by virtue of the buffering effect it provides. Part of what you hear is the fizz produced by pushing the amp too hard with treble.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :icon_wink:
Fuzz face is my guess.
Let me see.... input cap was roughly .1uF.
Settings were roughly 1 o'clock for the 'Gain', volume was about 10 o'clock.
...and you were wearing ablue shirt when you recorded this.
Am I right?

That's my guess too with gain at 3 o'clock. I'm not sure for the blue shirt...giving the rift, i think he was n*ked...and the pop we ear is not coming from the switch...well you know! :D
Sorry!
Dan
I think it's a dist+ type circuit boosting the front end of a tube amp/
Dist +
First thought = Big Muff
Second = Rat

Add another transistor to that circuit ;).
Mark: While there is some amp distortion, there isn't as much as you are thinking..
Tonebender?
Tonebender?
???
Yes sirs! MKII variant to be exact.
I'll see about posting some more sound clips later. I hope some other people get in on this too!
This thread is a great idea, Cliff! I'm terrible at identifying pedals (and guitars, and amps for that matter), so I'm thinking this will actually be good practice. Some pedal "ear training", if you will. :icon_wink:
It was one of those ideas that popped in my head when I NEEDED to fall asleep but couldn't. I thought it would be fun, especially with some of the oddball crap I plan on throwing at you guys >:).
Great idea!
Nice slide work...
Dang! I was busy at work and got back too late for round 1.
If I'm not mistaken the song you played was rollin' and tumblin'
;D

Yup! It's supposed to be the Canned Heat version like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZaC8XAUFmc
Alan Wilson is one of my musical heroes and is closely related to my mom! I need to start listening to them again..
