That is exacly what I do. I draw the four views in autocad to figure out how to place everything. Glue that on cardboard and cut the holes. make detacheable corners to unfold the box if you have a hard time with the wiring. Then print another paper-views-box that you can put over your hammond box. If you have drawn the centerlines of your components, punching the centerholes is easy and precise over the paper layout on the box. Drill your holes, paint and take the circuit you had in the carboard box and put it in it's real enclosure.

The bottom line is that I am basically impatient, so I do these sorts of things to try and stay on top of things. But, OTOH, I try to make the most of every day since I am working like four part time jobs from my house right now and every one of them seems to be sporadic, so I whip stuff out as I get it. I don't like being behind on things or having a huge list of things to do...

I recently made a drilling template out of a tissue box and lot's of duct tape for a 3 knob 1590B with LED, and power Jack
finally realized "Hey ... why am I always re-inventing the wheel for these things measuring, marking etc."

That is some dern hard-card-board, actually hard to rip by hand.
I save/use them for...all kindsa stuff.
Once I went as far as to fashion 1/4'' jacks in a Mouser box...sometimes...when that's what you have...that's what you use.
I did this when I was putting my ring stinger together. I couldn't keep the pots apart, nor the jacks from getting in the way. I took a flat piece of cardboard and just attached the pots, switches, etc. to it and did all the work I needed to on the circuit with it just hanging from the paper. Cardboard is a great way of testing circuits before boxing them.
I see that I'm not the only one that's thought of this idea before. In any case, whatever works, right? :icon_wink:
Hahaha, this is so great. I was having a stressed out day with all this AP summer assignment but this just made my day.
Awhile ago I used strong paper as thick as business cards to simulate the enclosure for preplanning. And now I just realized I have cardboard to use which is camouflaged to my wood floor....
