Title: Help me identify these caps?
Post by: novotm on September 04, 2009, 11:47:58 PM
I'm not sure what these are.  I was thinking that they were tant, but the lack of polarity markings makes me think they're multilayer ceramics.

The markings are:

JBY
942
ASA (?)
102

So, I'm thinking they're .001 uf multilayers.  Am I right?  Wrong?  Anyone know what the other markings mean?

Thanks!

Pretty sure they are 1nF (102) multilayers.

My guess is,
942 is a date code
JBY manufacturer
ASA model/series

last two could be swapped.

Unless you can find some info (and I can't) you can only guess the material the cap is made of - that might not be important to you anyway.

I think I saw caps like those on the ebay some time ago. They were advertised as ceramic...

They look like these to me http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Capacitors/Ceramic/Axial-multilayer-ceramic-capacitors/62502 (http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Capacitors/Ceramic/Axial-multilayer-ceramic-capacitors/62502)

I use these quite a bit. The radial versions are good as well especially for higher  470n - 1uF values due to the small size.

How can you say they are not tantalums just by looking at that photo  ???
Is it because they are small values and the code ?

Lack of visible polarity markings.

Lack of visible polarity markings.

I have some of them and I was sure they were tantalums but, yeah, I wondered why they did not have a sign somewhere for polarity...
Thanks

They are ceramic bead caps .001.
Not sure if they are multi layer but maybe.
