for the most part I've just built fuzzes
To get this guitar sound I imagine I need more of and overdrive or distortion design.
To me it sounds amp-like, high gain, chewy, thick and full.
Do you think maybe the BSIAB would be a good place to start?
Something with an LM386 perhaps?
thanks!
I've been into the Melvins since the 80's and if I remember correctly, he uses Sunn Amps, thick strings and tunes down
you can read up alot on Buzz's setup

wow, thanks LT
yeah, I suppose I've been a fan since the 90's
I think I was about 15 when I first heard of "drop-d" tunning through a guitar magazine article with Buzz
the OD/B-3's seem a bit daunting for me to diy ... I'll keep an eye on ebay though

maybe I'll try the RAT first and then go from there
if that gets some Houdini/StonerWitch sounds out of my V-4 I'll be happy
I got to see them twice in the past year. First with Dale and Coady on drums, Jared on bass, second time with just Dale on drums and Trevor Dunn on standup.
FWIW, at the second show, Buzz shared an Emperor amp/cab with the opening band Tweakbird. The cab had 2X12's and a 15 ...sounded great ... even through earplugs ;D
edit: actually .... the OD-3 doesn't look quite that difficult to build
update (if anyone's interested)
I tackled the OD-3 with a little guidance from WGTP's OD-3 Subclone

I stayed a little more true to the original OD-3 design
2n5457 input buffer fed into the bridged t-notch and kept diodes to ground on the buffered/unboosted signal
then the J201/NPN Bipolar discrete opamp into the J201 stage with 1n4001s from drain to gate
and then fed that into a 2n5457 gain recovery stage for the output with a SWTC just before the volume
it's all on the breadboard, sounds righteous and I'm working on a perf layout
I was asking about Gyrators in the other thread because I think that's pretty much what Buzz used the ODB-3 pedal for ... some EQ shapping for tonal changes when needed. I know he's getting some more complex distortion as well from the ODB-3 three but I think the biggest impact that pedal has is the EQ for a more scooped and metal sound. That might be the next build ... something like ROG's MR.EQ or maybe something a little more tweakable like RG's parametric article illustrates
