Title: Other Repurposed Stuff
Post by: chptunes on February 18, 2013, 12:26:16 PM
Altoid/candy tins have their own thread.  Is anyone using other household items to make fun stuff?

I've got one of these with a passive AB switch in :)

I never got round to giving it a bit more internal rigidity so it squishes a little bit before the foot switch clicks. Otherwise it works great :)

Put the mustard powder back in the tin, George!  That'll stop it squishing...

Or it will end up in small smoke machine, specialising in stinging the eyes of those at the front of the audience in a puff of yellow smoke... ;)

I guess candle wax in large quantities could work though? not much to go wrong in an AB box...

Nice move.  Keep the riff-raff away from your nice shiny instruments.   :icon_twisted:

Here is an old CRT TV that I repurposed into a 12" speaker cab.  The Nintento on top houses a Electro Harmonics 22 caliber amp.

Cool stuff!!

Most of you have seen this, but this seemed an appropriate place to post it. It's a Noisy Cricket amp with a Tiilman Preamp, Umble Tonestack, and Solstice Reverb. It also has a 1-watt stereo amp for playing backing tracks through the onboard speakers. The speaker "cab" houses a 10" Jensen Mod speaker.

Ipod case, can't remember which model but now houses an audio tester, signal generator on one side and LM386 amp on the other. Circuit was from a library book on SMT projects.

Enclosures from sheet metal from an old desk drawer, which qualify as "household items", I guess.  If I could just figure out how to flatten curved sheet metal from tin cans and coffee cans, maybe a flattening jig is in my future, hmmmmm.......

I have two flattening jigs. one looks like a block of wood, the other looks like a hammer.

bluebunny, I always wanted one of those giant old tvs to convert into a combo amp, just so I could paint an old test pattern onto the speaker grille cloth thing.

That switch plate is from the hardware store, for that extra rugged look, think I have one or two more somewhere.

The "pcb" in that is a repurposed piece of circuit board from some old equipment that had no holes and almost no traces, so I cut it out, sanded off any traces that was there and drilled my own prototyping board.

So if you where to use this link in the img brackets it would work but it would be gigantic

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/sh/6aqv8e39i7724rv/rA4kQcDpz3/Photo%20Feb%2022%2C%2010%2008%2006%20PM.jpg?token_hash=AAEBCX1XHUDhS7eUf-F30tlefGmKUpSwA9fdV3OG3AaXNw

So you should probably resize and view original image and copy the link from that. Or try out photobucket its pretty easy has a one click copy link for forums .

Its not bad. It's a little frustrating that they don't have the schematic posted or at least they didn't when I built it. You definitely need to add pull down resistors. The feedback pot is a nice mod to this circuit, though on certain settings you don't get much travel on that pot before getting oscillation, i think i added a series resistor to tame the oscillation a bit but I'm not sure. There is a bit of noise on longer repeats. I tried the warp switch mod and it basically just sped up the delay there wasn't pitch modulation like in the video so I don't know if that's just an effect of guitar vs synth or I had it wired wrong but it's hard to tell from their instructions, if you figure it out let me know because it seemed like a cool quirky effect. I removed this switch. The feed blast mod is kind of cool but much higher level the way they have it so I added a resistor and played with the value to get feedback that starts at a similar level as the regular effect and builds into oscillation. Their instructions are ok, not as good as GGG which is the only other kits I have experience with but it's still a very easy build. Overall I can't complain especially for the price of the kit. It's a fun delay to play around with!

The Old radio turned into a Noisy Cricket amp is a great idea. Plus it has that vintage "mojo" for whoever sees it. Can you plug it into a speaker cab too? That would be cool to show up to a practice with an old style radio for an amp..!

Didn't know that, but I guessed there'd be some measurable resistance in those lines .... 2Mohm takes quite a bit of ink i'm sure.
Thanks for the compliment. There's a demo video on my blog too.

@emilyandmiles  cool!    i have put a ruby amp in an old transistor radio, but i'm not done yet, have LED's and connectors and stuff

I suggest a one knob OD like SHO or perhaps that one knob fuzz?

And while I'm here, I may as well post something. It's nowhere near as cool as the stuff I've seen so far, but I just re-discovered it while cleaning my basement. It's a self-etched pulsar tremolo clone from the layout by the fabulous people at Tonepad. I wasn't in love with the sound but still wanted it in a firm enough box to play with but without committing a hammond to it.

Well, I will be messing with some pedals using repurposed VCR parts soon that I picked up and harvested of transistors, resistors, caps, switches, jacks, etc, earlier this year - that and remaking my old high school "Motor-Bow" invention using the motors from said VCRs.  I'm planning to take any dead electronics that I can't make money repairing/reselling and re purposing them for pedal builds.
