Title: Builder Needed to Construct a Looper / Sampler Pedal
Post by: Verb on March 25, 2014, 07:27:10 PM
I am looking for a builder to construct a looper / sampler guitar pedal. Thank you.

Pick one of the commercially available loopers. There isn't really a "build at home" looper project above "enthusiast" level, with the complexity involved it's a bit like asking someone to build you an Ipod.

I checked out Mobius... still checking out Mobius... almost checked OUT because of Mobius!  Powerful, flexible, poorly documented.  Be prepared to spend a LOT of time figuring it out.

You can get a Loophole board over at Madbean's site.  He doesn't sell them anymore but click the 'Discont'd PCBs' link at the top of his forum and one of the members there will etch one for you.  I built one of them and it works great.

I actually want to build a sampler pedal that contains specific recordings that are continually re-used. It is a new concept guitar pedal.

My Digitech Jam Man can do that; transfers WAVs from your computer via USB.  Holds 99 loops, don't know how many hours but it's way more than I would ever need.

I feel that your design spec lacks detail.

You're aware that this is a site for hobbyists, not full-scale R&D departments?

I'm sure there are more than a few members on here that might disagree with you.  :icon_rolleyes:

Paging deadastronaut...... BEEP!  :P

EDIT: To clarify......

I am sure that Rob can testify to the fact that some people have used others work from here as their own personal R&D to start "their company" :icon_evil:

Ok, i just did it, i built a 400hour looper from 2 egg boxes, a clutch from a ford mondeo , and a nesquik carton....works great, but in getting a lot of 60hz hum, i might need to swap the clutch for a Renault clio.... :icon_biggrin:

5 speeds plus reverse.  Awesome.

That's the resonant frequency of strawberries. Try a chocolate Nesquik container, given its rock'n'roll heritage:

 ;Dthe banana flavour works good...

i think the chocolate flavour would have that classic bad macca/beatles effect were i would end up looking thoroughly smug all the time and writing really shit songs though.... ;D

for reference, builing a looper that does more than simple record and playback is considerably more involved than 99% of pedals out there. like orders of magnitude more involved. there's programming, high-speed components, etc.

what you're asking for is weeks, if not months of someone doing R&D full-time, depending of the features you want. if it needs to do more than simple record/playback, they'll essentially be designing and building a simple computer in a pedal box. modern loopers literally are simple computers (with a CPU, ram, codec chip, like a soundcard, lots of programming, etc).

what features are you looking for specifically?

I'd love to see a schematic for that one. Any chance of a vero layout?

Hi folks,
I've build a looper using a Blackfin DSP from Analog Devices. You can record and store up to 32GByte of samples on MicroSD Card. It works very well ! Now I'm programming the overdubs and the UNDO and REDO function. I cannot post the schematics or sources because I'm using a part of the software drivers of my company!
FYI: buy a looper at your local store if you're not an electrical engineer or embedded software programmer!

Regards & rock on!
Walter

Does the Blackfin have an affordable development system?  I don't need a looper but every now and then I get a little frustrated with the code length limitations of the chip I'm working with.

+1000000

The only things on my board that aren't DIY are my looper and my tuner, because for 99.99% of people there's no practical reason not to buy one of the lovely yet affordable commercially available ones.
