I search for the best DIY Kit to make my own Multi-Effect pedal!?
Easy to built (with my beautiful Weller SPG40), thru-hole, programable effect etc.. :)
it doesn't exist, it doesn't matter.. I just want to do something other than soap making..
You'll be hard pressed to find something though hole that's powerful enough and with enough memory to do DSP. Off the top of my head I think a PIC32 or something like this LPC1100XL (http://www.nxp.com/products/microcontrollers/product_series/lpc1100/series/LPC1100XL.html) in a DIP package would be breadboardable and powerful enough to get you started.
If you're after a development board/kit I'd look for something from Analog Devices (blackfin or sharc maybe?).
You will quickly run in to RAM problems when playing with DSP stuff. Especially 'long going effects' like reverbs and delays. Mono audio in 16bit, 44.1kHz needs about 88kBytes per second. This is the quality you're used to hearing from most consumer electronics. You could probably get away with lowering the bit depth (dynamic range) and sample rate (frequency range [google nyquist]) somewhat, but it quickly deteriorates into a painful listening experience.
If you've not seen the Analog Devices' resource on DSP have a look at their beginners-guide-to-dsp (http://www.analog.com/en/design-center/landing-pages/001/beginners-guide-to-dsp.html). It's a good starting point.
nice! I would like to create a perfect very lo-fi digital multi-effect / thru-hole, probably with Arduino.. I'm sure that is a very good idea 8) ,.. but I really don't care about the theory / layout of DSP :P.. so I can build my own Arduino and program with an existing library..
