Title: Has anyone ever traced the Funk-a-Duck?
Post by: digi2t on October 03, 2016, 12:55:01 PM
Just wondering. I have one headed my way, so I thought I would ask before immersing myself too deeply into it.

Sounds like a resonator with an envelope detector on the front end. I'm curious to see how much (if any) of the resonator circuit is in there.

Can't wait to hear that please Dino. I'm curious about what's inside now too.

I'll post gutshots as soon as it hits my bench. I'll have to make a clean spot first though. :icon_mrgreen:

Watched a quick demo and read some reviews.  This is powered on 16 volts?   :icon_rolleyes:
I have confidence in your abilities...you'll figure a way to use 9 volt power!   ;)

Didn't bother. The Resonator works off the same power scheme (16vac adapter > +/- 15vdc), and that's what we used for the Tresonator build.

I miss Paul Perry.   :icon_sad: :'(  I hope he's doing okay...somewhere.

Didn't realize there was anything else using that scheme...my bad...

If I'm not mistaken, I think that the 16VAC power was used so as to increase the available headroom. Lots of folks use these pedals with big signals (i.e. deejays, synths, etc.), so more room between the rails cuts down on the distortion.

The last I read, he was running a bookshop in Melbourne.

funk a duck is like a one-channel resonator switchable between high and low-pass...whereas resonator you get both at the same time. would also LOVE to check one of these out! When on ebay and such they tend not to command prices as high as the other frostwaves...

Going to open it up tomorrow.  :icon_cool:

Sorry... took me longer than expected to get it open. Simultaneous Lab Series preamp, and Son of Storm Tide flanger builds might be to blame.  :icon_lol:

Here are the first pictures. Like I said, I'm kind of wrapped up in two monster builds right now, so I'll be slow to trace it. At first glance though, it does look like half of an MS-20 style filter section, with and envelope detector on the front end. I tried it, and it sounds pretty good, but I find that the envelope is rather picky when it comes to pick attack. You have to be fairly constant on the attack, or else it gets kind of hit or miss. I should have put The Engineers Thumb in front of this, it probably would have done a fine job of stabilizing things. Power section looks to be basically copy/paste of the Resonator. Straight forward +/-15v made from 16vac. Anywho, on with the show....

Well, here's the first tracing. Gonna sit down and draw out a schematic now.

It looks like a photo of the component side- double check the pinouts of the transistors. E=C?

Dang Russ! You might be right... I think I got flip-flopped.  :icon_confused:

I'll check it tonight.

The transistor pinouts are backwards on my first draft. Here's the update;

I'll get all the component values up soon.

Here you go folks. Sorry about the messy layout, but I always sucked at laying out schematics.  :icon_rolleyes:

The double 0 ohm resistors are there because they're on the board. The "Env out" and "Bypass" boxes are open pads on the board. I just drew it like I saw it, that includes the bypass switch setup, which is something that I've never seen before. If you see anything hinky, let me know and I'll check it out. If anyone wishes to clean this up, by all means...

I may have it wrong, but take a look at the Korg Monotron VCF - supposedly based on the MS20 filter - and it may help to make a little more sense of Paul's filter in the F-A-D.
