Title: DURING Quarantine - anything going on?
Post by: aron on May 02, 2020, 03:12:52 PM
Anyone doing anything during quarantine??? Live performances, builds, youtube video, recordings?
Put it here so we can view. Normally this would be in the OT, but what the heck, these are different times.
Send us a link so we can view.

I'll start. I wrote this when I was frustrated at the situation, losing all gigs etc... Wrote this tune called It may never end. Check it out (https://www.aronnelson.com/music/It_May_Never_End_Aron_Nelson_2020.mp3)

Excellent stuff...but you do realise you now have to tell us about all the different pedals you used during the recording? ;)

I've been taking advantage of the lockdown to try and get a few things I've been meaning to do for years actually finished. One  is getting myself to a place where I can develop programs for the FV-1 chip. Another is working on the "version 2" of the Druid DigiDelay. I can't say much more about that one right now, except to say that it fixes the biggest problems the original had.

I finished my surfy reverb/trem.

i'm a good way through a 5E3 build.

I tested all my transistors.

I still can't get the Gaggia to quit tripping the RCD.

And it's taken a month to do a one-week essay assignment.

On the bright side, my dad got out of hospital yesterday having survived the virus. Tough old bugger.

I've modded my TS9 and built a Bluesbreaker with a couple of mods.
It was a tight build with all the switches under the board, should've gone for a 1590N instead, but it fit.

My friend (and bandmate) has started his own radio broadcast which has been a lot of fun to listen to. Especially as he gets progressively drunker and drunker as the show goes on. This week we did a 'phone in' where he called me and asked me about pedals i'm working on. I also had to select three tracks which were influential in making me want to build effects pedals. That was a really hard task, at a push i went with:
The Birthday Party - Figure of Fun
Radiohead - Go to Sleep
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow

My son and I managed to finish a new album:

https://mushroomsinshampoo.bandcamp.com/album/summer-endings (https://mushroomsinshampoo.bandcamp.com/album/summer-endings)

Which, as it's name suggest, should've been finished last year...

I've built a modified big muff (that I need to make a demo video for) and a filter pedal (Twin T filter) that I do need help on modifying... that's for another thread though.

I'm glad that I have the ability to create music as a way of ignoring reality; I suspect that 'normal' people who don't have a creative outlet for their minds or hands will get much more upset / concerned / stressed than those who can find something to do. If I just had less work rather than more because of COVID, well that would be helpful.

i have started to build my pedal based bass/kick synth, i have found a friend of mine who is going to rap, and one to program and play a drum machine for the rest of the drums. we have already started writing some stuff. i make demo's using a DAW and simulate what my "rig" is going to do, but with plugins in FL Studio instead of hardware, so we can prepare the drum machine parts and write lyrics. the style we chose is a hip hop subgenre called Trap. its quite popular in my city, we plan on debuting live on the first evening that the horeca reopens. its funny that most bands in my area still practice weekly... my punk band doesn't and our drummer now lives on the other side of the country.

the things on my planning are:
1} i need to build a very wooly distortion to mellow out the sawtooth first, octave fuzz also seems to help a lot, but i'll just use a modified DOD250, with a scoop filter and a standard LPF
2} a voltage divider keyboard for the EXP in on the Electro Harmonix Pitchfork so i can play bass lines that double as a kick... ow yeah!!!!
3} write songs with FL Studio
4} when synth is finished, learn songs on synth.
5} practice songs together, with 6ft distance of course.

cheers,
Iain

Flux of Pink Indians - tube disasters

Yeah The Birthday Part are great, and that first album is fantastic. It was Nick Cave's first band. If you like that you may like one of his other projects called Grinderman.
Both these bands tend to be heavier than his main outfit; Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Check out:

Yes thanks! It's nice to make something that finally gets completed, and playing with someone who is much more talented than I am teaches me a lot. Did you play everything on that track you posted? I've never been able to get my head round drum patterns hat sound interesting, it always impresses me when people do that and play guitar / keyboards as well.

I'd like to say I wish I could do circuits and designs right now but I can't.
Struggling with my mind, so instead I've been gardening and getting my neck red.
Enjoying the fresh air and I have lots of flowers to show for it.
I'll be back on the circuits soon hopefully. I'm storing ideas meantime and possibilitys.
Stay safe ya'll.

Sorted out my coffee machine.

THe main issue was a short in the IEC mains cable? Whoever heard of a fault in a mains cable? Plus the coil in a little solenoid valve failed. Switched in one from my main machine and it works fine now, new one ordered.

I love that there's this coffee machine subculture, with all the bits - pumps, valves, etc  - being made in Italy for not much money. If only as many British companies were still making speakers and transistors. Come to think of it, how come the Italians are still making Jensens when Celestions are now made in China?

Writing and recording songs with some friends. So far so good. We write a bunch of lyrics in a zoom meeting, divvy them up and write a song. Then everybody tracks theirs and posts it up in a Dropbox.  Then you download someone else's song and overdub.  Only need a cheap interface and maybe a mic. We're using Reaper software which is free for 60 days.

Finished all the build docs, code, schematics, etc. for my latest project, the DiSH (https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=124380.0 (https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=124380.0)). Posted a video demo as well. It's an analog sample/hold supplied with a digitally-generated control voltage. Has tap tempo, tempo divisions, pattern setting, etc. Check it out! Build one! I've got gerber files in there, and I've got a few leftover PCB's if anyone wants to build one but doesn't want to place an order with JLCPCB, OSHPark, etc.

Adds modulation!?  :D

As someone with a vintage EHX 2 & 16 second digital delay in for repair, can I make a suggestion for an 'infinite repeats' (phrase looper) foot switch.

Apart from the above repairs, I quite badly burnt my leg last weekend so aside from oil painting I'm mainly doing circuit simulations from bed at the moment. Mainly filters and the like but also for a single supply TDA1022 version of the CE-1 as a forum project as that dual supply & MN3002 seems to be a stumbling block for a lot of people lately, personally I never got the fascination with the pedal.

You could get some transmitting tubes and make yourself a kilowatt audio amplifier.  Not sure what you would use for an output transformer but there are some people who would use a couple of more power transformers with the line voltage sides connected together so you could have a push-pull transformer made out of two power transformers.  But beware - you may have several kilovolts from this supply that could turn into killervolts.  You may need to wind a few turns for the speaker winding.

Playing around with synth circuits. Lunettas, and a benjolin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFfQTWMHPeU). Hope to put two of the latter in a wood box as a self-contained noise box!

Sort of interested in re-iterating on my old digital delay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVF2pl8RdD4) again. I'd start by porting it from PIC32 to ARM, and also try and fix some of the inherent flaws the old circuit has. Namely headroom. I'm not as proficient with clean analog design as I am coming up with weird audio-destroying effects.

Rich
I've been struggling mightily with my mental health during this quarantine, so I'm trying to keep some open-ended projects going to keep myself moving forward.  This one might make you smile, Rich.
I'm working up an envelope follower experiment rig using a method I'm just going to call hybrid breadboarding, in which some subcircuits get soldered up into a permanent form, despite there being no final design in mind, while other stuff gets breadboarded in a more traditional manner.
That's most of a Mutron III build from the tagboardeffects layout, with the filtering parts left off.  I have another board that rides on top with a charge pump and space to solder a permanent version of anything that ends up delighting me later.

Part of it is a recognition of the fact that I have more than once had to buy a new breadboard in order to prototype something because my existing breadboard space is taken up with semi-permanent experiments that I can't bring myself to tear down.  :icon_lol:
An example:

Sorted out my coffee machine.

I finally fixed my (only) shower, after about seven months of needless suffering.  If you have one of the one-knobbers that only puts out hot (or cold) water, it's a part called a Pressure Balancing Unit.  For the Kohler, the part is $52 at Lowe's, but I found one on Ebay for $20 shipped.  During the simple swap-out, I must've disturbed some crumbling seals in the mixer cap, which created a small leak when the water was running, a leak that sent water into the wall.  Well Kohler doesn't sell those seals separately, so I had to replace the entire mixer cap, and since I needed it the same day, there goes $42 at Lowe's.  But all good now, no more scalding hot showers, and I surely came in under the cost of hiring a plumber.

i used a microwave transformer in a class A power amp, using a DTS410 in a common emitter amplifier.
i put a 10H choke on the HV side for more inductance thus more efficient output.

Good job!

Mine was a newer design also (GP800820).  There are generics on Ebay of the older design for $10, but I didn't know how well those work, so I bought the new Kohler part.  From what I saw online, some brands' PBUs require a special tool, but the Kohler just pulls out by hand.

My clamp worked perfectly :)

Admission time. I wear false nails. Well, I play with my nails not a pick, they're very thin and they break easily. When they do, I'll stick all kinds of things over them, flood with superglue and keep playing.

So, a new guitar fitted with pickups carefully chosen from my parts bin was tearing my nails to pieces. Sharp edges to the pole pieces. Decided to file of the edges. Masked, filed then more tape applied and rubbed down hard to capture the filings. Works nicely - I ended up with a little more bevel than this pic shows

Admission time. I wear false nails. Well, I play with my nails not a pick, they're very thin and they break easily. When they do, I'll stick all kinds of things over them, flood with superglue and keep playing.

Ping pong ball, manicure scissors and super glue. Took classical guitar for years and my job was working with hands all day long so nails were always a struggle. You get long stares from patrons when you're in the salon getting a manicure.

I've been self isolating for years. Making the most of my time as business has been slow. Weekday hikes are best now since everybody and their cousin are "outdoors" people on weekends during the advisory.

Other than more mountains, I've been picking at the breadboard and sipping on jack and cola while roaming the west (RDR2). Yeah, I'm fancy.

I meant to mention those Aldi clamps. They do a set of 2 large & 2 small. I found them especially useful to clamp a guide fence on the drill press table so I can chain drill long slots for slide pots.
Though, they are "special buys" so might not be stocked in stores currently.

> Anyone doing anything during quarantine??? Live performances

I went to WalMart. Here, limit 100 customers in the store so most of the day there is a waiting line, perhaps 10-30 minutes. It's real boring. And it will be followed by the really insipid muzak in the ceiling.

If a mellow singing guitarist set up near (>6 feet) the line, they might collect a few dollars and a few smiles.

Obviously Walmart can't pay you (the local manager has no authority). It may even be illegal (in the next town, 3 amplified instruments must have a license). Laws about "begging". Keep it mellow, low-key. Be ready to quit and split without attitude.

Not a bad idea Paul. I know all our stores are limiting customers, but the only time I've had to stand in line and wait was home depot. Everyone in town seems to have time at home and now has their stimulus check, time to renovate the house/yard apparently.

Watch the video below, try to control the "earworm"
"Have you ever woken up in the morning and realized that you have a song stuck in your head? Usually they're annoying—the sorts of songs you don't want stuck in your head; the sorts of songs that, if you begin to sing them aloud, will garner you numerous nasty looks from the people around you. Because now they, too, have that dumb song stuck in their heads."
"Those songs are called earworms. The name for the catchy tune is apt: the word itself sounds wriggly and unappealing. This particular earworm is an English translation of the German name for the tunes—Ohrwurm. Those Germans, you think. They have the best words."

near the garage door, the bromeliads have bloomed, or flowered, at least.

in the Illawarra Flame tree over the same garage, in the gloom, is the last Brush Turkey, the rest of the family moved out this week.

and, inside the garage, I've been buzzing wood w/ the router, for boxes. honestly, I make this shit up as I go along, I have no idea what will be the end look, and it rarely matches my original "vision". see here:

top left shows Lagarostrobos franklinii, Huon Pine [note - not a eucalypt], two side panels and the end pieces with channels cut for the noise panel I'm building. the top right w/ finger joints is for the carcass of same, is Tasmanian Oak, [one of] Eucalyptus regnans (mountain ash), Eucalyptus obliqua (stringybark or messmate) or Eucalyptus delegatensis (alpine ash or woollybutt). we use that for door frames and picture rails.

bottom left shows two cut, near ready [note the bands from the double stick tape] panels of Bottlebrush,
Callistemon citrinus 'Endeavour' [note - not a eucalypt] - which was grown in our yard. very very sleek and satin smooth finish - well, it will be when polished properly. the grubby yellow mess lower left is what I used to think was bleached Jarrah, but now think is Eucalyptus robusta, swamp mahogany or swamp messmate. that is to be side panels for an overdrive.

I've made a few cuts in the huon pine since taking the pics this arvo, and am somewhat happier with the way that is shaping, even if the finished proportions will be way off what I wanted.

You have leaves? Pure luxury!!

The crocuses have come and gone, the hyacinths are withering and the daffodils are finally out, but we're waiting for leaves, here.  The annual tulip festival was cancelled.  We had snow flurries this morning.  May the 8th and we have snow.  It didn't remain on the ground, but the very notion that it was cold enough for a drizzle to transform into flakes is deeply offensive.  The irony is that the province declared yesterday that garden centers could open up today.  Uh-huh.  "Could I possibly see what bedding plants you have there under those sheets?"

I'm finally starting to play music again. Recording all kinds of stuff with musicians from all over, just trading files. I was having a great year before covid killed every job I have: gigs, sessions, teaching, etc., possibly for years, who knows. Luckily my friends and family are healthy but I was too depressed to pick up my instruments. But I've finally turned the corner, and feel like playing again. Did that happen to anyone else? Didn't feel like picking up a guitar or whatever it is you play? Anyone else recording at home?

I had two projects in the pipeline before this all kicked off.  First some collaboration with an old mate who I've not played music with for years.  I learned that whilst he's a prolific song writer, he doesn't ever perform.  So we agreed we'd re-form a band from forty years ago and I'd record some parts over a couple of his demos.

I was also supposed to be recording some demos myself to send to a hotel, to pitch for a small job at Christmas.

In the intervening weeks, my whole routine has changed - like everyone else - and I've not done a jot, although I have carried on playing a bit.  But now I must get back to both activities.

You'd be in big trouble for that over here. It's not essential, it's not exercise -  and the real problem - do you expect to be helped by the emergency services if you need them? Every time an ambulance picks someone up, it has to taken out of service to be cleaned.

And all of that makes total sense (though the level of soreness I end up with makes it feel like exercise). Our national and state parks are closed, but our county is small and secluded, resulting in relatively few cases, so they've kept county parks open with park rangers on duty both for safety and to enforce social distancing.

In north Maine we have a TV Nite Show. Traditionally low production values (recycled VHS), altho in recent years they get a local college's theater and media students to produce it. And then lockdown. Danny is in his basement SAMPLE (https://youtu.be/p71jBbDEtQM) doing bad jokes without a pretense of a laughtrack, Zoom-meeting guests, and also inviting bands to submit videos.

This was on tonite's show. I assume that like Aron's video one track sets a beat and each performer adds his own licks over that. While watching "live" we had the feeling the video is a lip(/pick)-sync job (no shame in that).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiebKCi9C7Y
I offer it as something musicians ARE doing while apart.

Yep Paul. I made a music track with a scratch lead. Then Ken recorded his video responding to my original scratch lead. Then I recorded my video in response to his video. I didn't reference his video visually at all. I just played to his audio. Then after that, I resynced the video to the audio. A real pain and just a semblance of how live music is done. Oh well.

In England, it is now ok to go to work in construction & manufacturing. Also, travel to other places for exercise & sports is now allowed. Here in Wales, it's still lockdown stay at home. The reason is, being a sparsely populated place, there isn't actually the facilities for health & emergency to cover anything on top of the virus effects. In normal times, they are kept busy mopping up tourists who have fallen, drowned or crashed in our "challenging" roads, coasts & countryside. I can usually expect to hear emergency vehicle sirens (low crime so it's rarely anything other than an accident) and see the bright red air ambulance chopper on a mission whenever the sun shines especially during public and school holidays. During the lockdown, I don't think I've seen the ambulance chopper once and sirens are rarely heard.

I have a schematic, a layout and a partially populated board sitting here and most days I take my copy of the schematic and add a few more red lines showing what I have connected up already.  It's going slow because I am lazy and I don't have every aspect of the design thought out yet.  When it is done, it will be unique but I am not ready to say what it is because it may or may not work.  I have about $40 worth of parts into it, so it had better work!

I finally finished my effects loop pedal. It splits the guitar signal in two, sending both signals to different effects loops. The returns are send to two other effect loops and then mixed to the output. So I have two parallel effectloops that go to two other loops which are also in parallel. Sounds more complicated than it is, if you're interested drop a reply and I will try to explain it in more detail. Maybe a nice project if you're sitting at home during the lockdown.

I got another four resistors soldered in today.  Just enough to be able to say I did something.  I had to change the layout a bit, so I occupied myself with that as well.  Some people would consider this lack of activity to be a sign of depression but actually it is only a sign of laziness.  Or maybe it's just a sign that I don't have the design fully thought out yet.  Oh well, at least I have time.

I am beginning to hate components that came off a tape reel because there is always some glue on the far ends of the component leads.  Acetone didn't do much but contact cleaner got all of it off eventually.

I've been plugging my pedalboard into an Astrosim and using headphones to save annoying the missus who has her home workstation in my music room. Sounds great but there are cables running everywhere so I thoughts I'd order another board from Rob and integrate a sim under the board with the controls at the side.

While waiting for the board, I modded the ABY at the end of the chain, adding an AMZ splitter and two more outputs. One for the sim, the other for the sound to light led's on the front of the board (cause I'm pretentious and I can). Output from the ABY is located for the neatest patch cable run to the sim. Good planning see?

Got the board, started populating, ordered the resistors I'd run out of, ordered the caps I'd run out of, ordered more caps because I'd not noticed another value I didn't have, waited some more and finally completed the build. Looks very neat, takes no room on the board and sounds great.

Only thing is, I have to play sitting on a stool or with a bent back cause the headphone cable is too short. Good planning see?  :icon_redface:

Went to my favourite electronic speakeasy today.

At A-1 Electronics, you knock on the door and Glenn comes to the door but doesn't open it.  He asks what you want and you tell him.  He then goes and looks for it, brings it to the door and checks that you agree with what he has picked and if you are satisfied, he will go to the cash register and calculate the price.  He tells you to put the money on the table outside and then tells you to back off while he takes the money and then goes to the cash register and gets your change and puts it in the bag with the components and closes the door.  In this case, I was looking for two 0.1 ohm resistors and two 0.1 µF capacitors that came to a total of $1.70.

Does this sound like a drug deal to you?  I may be a low-roller as customers go but I wonder how much business he is losing due to people's inability to browse?

Yesterday I saw a real live performance.

The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen was doing a "take away" event in the backyard of the building where I grew up. My son recently got an apartment there so we saw it from his balcony.

It was really great. First an opera singer sang an aria and then two dancers from the royal ballet did a pas de deux. Lastly there was sing along.

People where cheering and applauding from windows and balcony's. So much fun. And I could wave to my mom who was watching from her window.

Not just inability to browse, but an inability to have customers that require one's services, that in turn require parts.  As hobbyists, our parts-requirements depend on us, and no one else.  If I was a repair-person, I likely wouldn't have many strolling into my shop with a busted this or that, and wouldn't have many house-calls.  So I wouldn't be frequenting parts distributors, whether they were industrial specialists or surplus houses.

This is a big deal. At my day job we place several multiple-thousand dollar orders a month at digikey and mouser, but all our approved PCB fab houses are closed down. No point in ordering components if we can't get boards to put them on.

Well, i have recorded a couple of songs with my daughter, son and wife, but the wife wont let me post them, so there you go...  Also finished my RC 30" catamaran with my son:

We started scratch building it about a year or more ago, but I never had time to work on it.  Quarentine came, and boat got finished!  That thing is FAST!  I estimate 60mph or so.  Then my son asked how we could race with only one boat, so I built a deep V as well (24"):

Not yet finished that one (just put the name - QUARANTINE, obviously! - on today, and I am working on the outdrive now, as it arrived today).  But I expect this one to be in the 40mph range.

Also finally got around to finishing my MXR Noise Gate clone:

And since the new pedal case arrived, redid my board to include the newly finished Looper 8, along with the new power supply, and incorporating the tuner into the pedal case.  It looks messy, but it works!

I also built my Quackmire and my OCD Overdrive (though I still need to troubleshoot them, as they are not working!)
