Title: Please read the forum rules
Post by: aron on January 09, 2021, 10:33:09 PM
No political posts or avatars please.
This is a stomp box forum, not a political forum. Please go there to debate.

I presume this is connected to that guy with paranoic post about being banned from various places...

However, what is this word SUPPORTER I see under my posts?

To all non-US forumites,

Americans are having an exceptionally difficult time right now, if we seem crazier than usual, well, we are. A little extra patience might go a long way. As would changing the subject back to diodes and op amps and germanium when you notice things starting to get political. Thank you dear friends, and thank you Aron, for steering the ship, cheers!

Americans have a hard time and i can see why. Not much more than in France which is quickly drowning.
But i hear you : music and electronic only here and it's important . I notice garcho's avatar is kind of very red...  is it yellow stars on it ?!

I noticed you're not very good at noticing things. It's a lamp, from Morocco, but if that makes me a Communist in your eyes, I can't imagine there's much I can do about it. Good luck!

Don't worry. First, i thought it was some sort of pizza art, then I looked closer then realized it wasn't that. After, i thought it was some sort of umbrella design. I held onto that belief until garcho spoke the truth... :icon_lol:

I m sorry garcho. It was a bad attempt to make a joke. I was thinking about Skunk Anansie's 1996's song : "Yes It's @#$%ing Political" with the great chorus : "Everything's political". I love that song ! Can you recognize the specific distortion on the guitar ?

QuoteI m sorry garcho. It was a bad attempt to make a joke.

^ No, it was a successful attempt, I'm just a little thick in the scull, ha! Sorry, to snap at you Rennes. Growing up in the States you hear a lot of people calling each other "communist", basically like calling someone a "dum dum head" or some other childish thing. And in these times, who knows what insanity people actually believe?! I appreciate your sense of humor, I'm the same. Sarcasm is hard to discern with text only, but I should have known better! Cheers, homey ;D

Quotesome sort of pizza art

did I say lamp from Morocco? Because I meant to say pizza art!

I see many other avatars but where Gary's/garcho's would be, there's a avatar sized square outline with a very small image icon in the top left corner, has not always been the case.

Looking through this thread and same thing has happened to bluebunny's avatar space.

I have "account settings"?  :o :icon_confused: News to me.
What am I missing by not having done whatever reveals avatars?  (Bear in mind you're talking to someone who never has, and never will, own a cellphone, because there is nothing of any particular use for me on them.  I recently got a new MP3 player after my previous one died, and 2/3 of what's on that is of no earthly use.)

So, again, what would I be missing by not monkeying around with my account settings?

For the most part I share your views on that topic. However, avatars provide a visual cue that humans can decipher quicker than a written name. Not a critical feature by any means but that's the reason why I have an avatar.

Hmm, I looked at the account settings in my profile, and basically all I see are some options regarding passwords, and my e-mail address.  Nothing that seems germane to avatars or anything beyond passwords.

I'd say these features allow you to appropriate the forum, and give some human warmth to this forum. I like the little sentences people can add under their posts (called "signature"). Unfortunatly, Mark doesn't have this... it's all in "profile" and then "forum profile".

Go to these account settings. Right above the horizontal bar titled Profile, there should be a button "Modify Profile". Hover the mouse over it and then click on the item "Look and Layout" that should appear. There are lots of options for me. I'm not familiar with the technical underpinnings of this forum. It is possible that your account is lacking these options altogether because it was created before the options existed. More likely, though, you have the options but they are turned off because they did not exist when the account was created. If there is a tick-box option "Don't show user's avatars", uncheck it and you should see the avatars. You may need to log off and on again for the change to take effect, I don't know.

HTH,
Andy

Edit: Oh, and you may also want to turn on user's signatures, there are some fun ones and some with interesting links in them.

Edit2: If you go to "Modify Profile" again and choose "Forum Profile" from the hover-over drop-down menu, you can link your own avatar file and signature text.

Okay, went there, and the only thing I thought worth modifying was removing the link to the website I used to have, courtesy of AMPAGE.  I don't think the link is valid anymore, so no point keeping it.  Don't see much point in avatars or signatures for myself.  So, I'm good.  But thanks for the info.

It's weird when there's this whole other world visible to others that you didn't even know existed.  I feel like Roddy Piper in the film "They Live". when he puts on the glasses.

If you want to examine an avatar in a little more detail, just zoom in. (CTL+, pinch etc) works better if the image is hosted elsewhere as they can be bigger than those allowed for embedding in the forum

I just checked and it is still valid. I remember it went down a few times (probably the whole ampage server went down on those times), but right now it's still active.

I believe it indicates where Aron has been able to identify those who have (recently) chucked a few pennies in his direction for the upkeep of the forum.  Perhaps a more muted indicator in the userid/avatar section might be more suitable, amongst the tiny profile/website/PM icons?

In dark mode where the avatar sits remains a white square with an icon in the top left corner.

@Bluebunny it's only of late that your avatar vanished for me.

Got it, Iain! Your avatar is actually a picture of a avatar that doesn't load for some reason. So maybe curious users keep trying to "refresh the avatar to see it", when they're actually seeing it. Very clever :icon_lol:

Maybe it's a DNS lookup issue.   It could even be something to do with blacklistings.

Most of the web has switched to https protocol.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS

In the last year several browsers have depreciated http in favor of https.

Firefox with my current settings will display an http page but with a warning.

In this case (after unwarranted investigation) it is clear that bouron.org.uk is not going to be asking me for passwords which others might eavesdrop.

If I had non-https connections blocked, I'd see nothing at that site, not even the bunny image.

As Paul says (and I said earlier) it's because it's on a HTTP (no S) connection.

I put a copy of my bunny pic on imgur, so now on a secure connection.

I don't doubt it.   I've seen warnings but not blocks but now you mention it there were a few issues when this forum changed from http to https.

I think successive iterations of the various browsers out there are also tightening up on their default behaviour, as Paul mentions with Firefox.

the bunny loads on a separate tab, after confirmation of a pop-up, the site only loads a background texture and some white text, and the image you posted here directly doesn't show

When I used to have a university office, invariably some student who thought they were the first in history to have the thought would insist on inscribing a C between the "M" and "Hammer" on the door sign.  I don't know if I feel worse for the person who wrote that, or for those who came after them with that intent and realized, to their dismay, that it was not their original idea.

My parents were concerned with avoiding contemporaneous sources of "heh, heh, heh" remarks.  The apocryphal story was that I was supposed to be Michael, but a nurse or someone in the hospital made a remark about the Micky Spillane character "Mike Hammer", that was gaining popularity at the time, and my parents thought better of it, so I became Mark.

When our youngest was born, we gave him two middle names, but hadn't decided on the order.  When it came time for me to fill out the birth registration form at the hospital, I thought about it and realized that one order would give him the initials BZT and the other order would give him BTZ.  Considering that no teenage or pre-teen boy would wish to be saddled with initials that could be pronounced as "butts" by his classmates, I went with the first order.

Names and initials are subject to all sorts of whims and snap decisions.  But enough about me  Please read the forum rules.

Great story about the initials too. I totally agree that Buzz't is way cooler than Buttz.

My sister was almost "NEW", but my parents realised at the last minute that "ENW" was a better bet, so her first and middle names got swapped around. It's funny how such apparently consequential decision get made...

Here in Brazil there's a music style called música popular brasileira (brazilian popular music), which is abbreviated as MPB. It's basically bossa nova, and it's a kind of "boring music for old people" in kids' eyes but great music once you grow up and learn how to listen to nice stuff. Kinda similar to how a kid and a grown person sees jazz.

My initials are MPB. It just took a (very intelectual and smart) teacher to point this out in front of the entire class when I was 9 or 10, and I had to take stupid jokes on this for some time.
