Title: Boss CE-2 mod. Flashing led for rate.
Post by: Buffalo Tom on February 01, 2021, 08:04:49 AM
Im rehousing an old Boss CE-2 and wanna add flashing led for rate. This is what I done but I get a ticking sound in the audio. Any ideas how to fix that?

I found the basic idea here. Schematic on last page https://moodysounds.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/analogchorusinstructions.pdf (https://moodysounds.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/analogchorusinstructions.pdf)

The other mods I have done is true bypass with shorting Q9 so the effect is always on. And replaced D5/R53 with jumpers for 9V operation from a DC jack.

I suppose you can't just put LED in series with transistor, maybe you shall add another transistor just to drive that LED and connect it's base to base of Q4 on schematic.

How did you install this mod? A little sub-board?

Try using a shielded cable and/or decoupling capacitors on the signal side of the circuit - IC1 and IC3.

After some more testing and reading I have discovered that the ticking sound is not something that came with the led mod. It's there without the led as well. I think its a shield issue as discussed in this post. https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=119508.20 (https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=119508.20)

you can just drive the LED + 3k3 with the left opamp's output, without the extra transistor, putting a 100nF over the opamps V+ and GND pins can reduce the ticking

cheers, Iain

Ah. So you think the CE-2 isn't enjoying it's new home?

There are a few ways to reduced ticking in that thread you had shared. Try whatever is available to you now and see if it helps!

Im working on that  ;D After some shielded cable and closed box hopefully the PCB will feel like home again
