Title: A Suggestion?
Post by: Rory on August 18, 2003, 10:42:10 AM
I really like this setup a lot, but I have a suggestion or two.  From the Forum index, would it be possible to have different threads from there?  Like, instead of "Building your own stompbox", have one for O.T. posts, one for troubleshooting, one for build reports, and one for schematics and maybe even more after that.  I think that would unclutter the one "thread" we have going.  What do you think?

What you suggest is one of the reasons a lot of people found Ampage a bear to deal with, it was too complicated.

I like one long thread myself.

I have to say that I agree with you. What you are suggesting was not possible with the old forum. The software running this new forum was written with tons of options and features. One example I mentioned before is that I can understand that some users will need to test how
to insert a schematic or an photo of their work in a post. However I also  think it would be a waste of valuable space if many start to test inside  the one and only discussion thread.
I would say that testing should have its own place and we don't have to archive the testing area. I would even suggest that schematics should have their own place so they are easier to find later on. All general discussion can remain where we have it today.
Just my opinion,

The format of this forum is really similar to a lot of other forums I use very happily.

Ampage is a pain in the neck and is done poorly. The site is too busy and it's hard to easily find your way around.

This forum can have various sections, like "build reports", "OT", "looking for schematics" etc.... and be really easy to use.

One other forum I'm on all the time is for my local music scene (www.wormtown.org) which has a bulletin board set up the same way as this one. You can check out the "active topics" here: http://www.wormtown.org/mb/viewactive.php

That's all I really check, because I'm checking it daily.

If this DIY forum had things sectioned off, I would still have "DIY - Active Topics" on my toolbar, so I could skip digging through ten different sections (for those who are annoyed with that format) or I can search through specific areas just as easily. I think we'd all get used to that format quickly and it would be a great way to organize it. Just my 2cents.

I think the active topics is a mod.

Anyway, I will check it out.

Thanks,

I find ampage tough to navigate as well. Its to difficult to find your way through and most newbies don't know their way around so they post in the general area anyways.

Keeping the forum stream lined is one of the keys to keeping this forum as the great reasource that it is. That is why the old forum worked better then other similar forums.

If I were to make sub-forums the topics I would probably use would be a General mayham area, schematic requests, links/articles/information/site updates, and an OT area.

Just my thoughts.
