I built a "Classic" several years ago and to date it's still my favorite distortion/overdrive pedal....way,way better than the sansamp GT.
I like it so much, I etch another pcb to build a 2nd one to see if it sounds as good as the first. I think I modded a second 3 pos switch for more tone preset. It's a real booger to build with all the wire connections ......4 pots, 8 bank dipswitch, and 2 - 3 position toggle switch.
Schematic please?
I made a pcb layout with a wiring diagram, but it's at home so I, have to post it tonight. It's in powerpoint format.
pls post the schematic coz i cant get it else where
i will second the Schem/PCB layout
I'll post them tonight.
i was servicing a classic unit long time ago
the sound was OK.. the FET preamp was dead , (so in bypass mode you get a low distorted signal).
there is a schematic somewhere but it misses some values
(caps and some others)..
it would be great if you have a complete schem and some samples..
good luck
Sorry it will probably be tomorrow before I post the schematic because I need to get permission from some one who checked and added comments on it before I post it. Then I will also post the layout which I did.
Lee!!!
Mine used to have the same problem but i replaced the fet with a mpf102 and "Listo!!!!"
Saludos, Marcelo.

Hmm, in front of a tube amp I always preferred the GT. But direct, or maybe with an SS amp, the classic does rule.

Anyone have PCB for classic sansamp ?
Thanks ;)
The schematic was already here at Aron's .... http://www.diystompboxes.com/cgi-bin/webbbs_scripts/webbbs_config.pl?noframes;read=302
I have a pcb layout and wiring diagram but it's a Powerpoint file so I have no way to post it. I can e-mail it to whoever wants it.

I'll have to compare the 2, but the only tube amp I have is a sub mini.
Spud, did you receive the file?
Yup, spot on. Thank you :)
Nikolay the email is bouncing back.
email it to me Bill, I will host it and post a link.
Nelson did you receive it?
plz bill send it to my email account too..
Lee_ranaldo79@hotmail.com..
yes.. i now it was a bad fet.. but the owner dissapeared.. so... it's not on my hands now.
Thanks Bill!!!
Thanks Bill :)
actually I don't have powerpoint, but I install it after minutes ;)
Spread the love!
Please send it to ej_sagun@yahoo.com
thanks in advance
To all I have sent the layout to.......
I need to check my working clone to see, but I think the trace between R27 and C16 needs to be cut and a jumper wire from R27 to pin 6 of the TL072. I also need to get the values for resistors and cap used in the extra tone mod switch I used.
Please send it to my email account too... I've built the GT2 and deffinitely I want to try the Classic.

Sorry I am at work now and the It dept have blocked webmail and FTP sites so I cant check email or upload it just now but will when I go home in around 4 hours
bloody split shifts are killin me!
Really thankful they havent blocked this
Wow Bill, That was quick.
looks pretty complicated. Ill put this on my "to do" list
thanks
Thanks Bill. Did you use TLC2264 for de quad opamp?
I'm going to open it up tonight. It's been so long since I built it, don't remember which quad I used. I'll take some pics of it and the new one I started on.
Please include me.

Enjoy, get it while you can, it wont be up forever....unles i forget to take it down....
any updates, errors corrections etc let me know I will update the file....
Hi all... I just notice on the wiring diagram the image is flipflopped so it's like your looking at the back. The pcb is fine ass far as being oriented for p-n-p but I will update the trace that need to be cut and add location for jumper to pin 6 of the TL072 (which I mentioned in an earlier post) Also I need to add a cap to the back of the pcb. Sorry for the mistakes. I also added some pics to the gallery of the old one and the new one I'm working on on page 2.... http://aronnelson.com/gallery/3dm
Send it to me when your done Bill, I will update the link
Thanks Nelson....uuhhh can you send me your e-mail address again... the dog ate it.
will update the link in about 4 an a half hours, the time now is 1709.
Just an idea ,it may be worth to have a collaboration effort with let's say Francisco and have him redo that layout.....I mean the complexity of that build and the ammount of outboard wiring is incredible. There has to be a better way.....
Aharon
Your right.
I'm not sure why I did that the way I did. Also It would be good to experiment with some of the component values as noted by Rob on the schematic.
I would volunteer, but my layouts are ALOT worse......
link updated BTW

Glad you agree Bill, after I wrote that message I though oh gawd I'm being rude to Bill who is one of the nicest guys on the net.It wasn't meant as a jab at your skills which are very well documented here at Aron's.
You are a gentleman and a master effect builder.
You sent me that layout when you first built it and I could not even try and I did not want to bother you with silly questions.
Anyway maybe we should page Fp.
Thanks
Aharon
No problem Aharon. I knew what you meant.

Darn !!!! my soldier iron just burnt out :x
So, I decided to start on a picture project for my wife that I had ben putting off. While digging thru the pile of digital photos lookikng for flower pics I found some pics of my first SA Classic and notice on the closeups I had used a couple wrong value caps(I use to drink a bit while build pedals). It will be interesting to see if it changes the sound of the second one.

I believe your right.
I compaired the GT to the Classic on my Mini tube(sub mini tube High Octane clone) and my Mini Cube(Roland SS), but it may not be the best comparison because of the speaker I used on the tube amp.
thanks Bill and Nelson
didnt kurt cobain use a sansamp classic at one point? into a mesa boogie preamp then into crown power amps before his marshall cabs...?
I think he did....
Adds to the mojo factor of this unit I am sure.
Any difference between the newer sansamp classic and the old one. I have an old one from 1990. It just says sansamp on it with no classic or anything. Looks the same as the sansamp classic, knob and dipswitch wise.
If any of you guys are about to start building one from my layout..... several words of advice.......Beg FP to do a new layout with less off board wiring(as Aharon suggested). :!:
or check with me before you start for some advice and a few possible corrections(not serious ones)........ :?
Just about done with #2. Once again I'll say the wiring is a terrible nightmare. It sounds similar to the first one although I had used a few wrong cap values in the first one(I notice from old closeup photos I took). I think that's why I had to use a jumper from R27 to pin 7 on the TL072.
You don't need that jumper if you used the right values that I didn't.
The only thing that's not right on either one is dip switch 6. It's suppost to be a tube sound amp setting. It does very little if anything. I would strongly suggest to any one who builds this to experiment with the noted values on the schematic (mainly to the dip switches) before final assembly. Here's a few more pics.... http://aronnelson.com/gallery/3dm?page=2
Hopefully no one is following this thread because I'm "Flip-Flopping" like John Kerry(who I voted for).
The cut trace between C16 and R27 with a jumper from R27 to pin 7 of the TL072 which I said yesterday to ignore has a major effect -
Upside 50% more gain and presence(you'll probably need to dial back on the treble knob a bit)
Downside - you lose the function of dipswitch 7 (no biggy)
yes "flip flopping"...glad you voted for the lesser of two evils
I do want to build this. But I want to wait till it is Verified by an electronic voting machine.
Or atleast until someone in a swiftboat verifies it as working.
Or i could wait until sansamp releases the original documents on it, ofcourse with the important bits blacked out.
Seriously though, has there been any word from the venerable layout magician Fp on this?
I verify it works because I built 2 of them(With my guitar and amp it souuds GREAT but your results may vary due to differentguitar/amp setups......I'm covering my butt).....but I would not recommend any one to build one till a layout is done without the off board connections to the switches.
Here's a few more observations C25 should be at least a 200pf cap and Hmmm.... leaving my self room to Flip-Flop again, I wonder if I remove the optional 39pf cap from pins 1 & 2 that I put there to kill the squeal from max present setting if that would give me the gain with out the previous forsaid jumper....... confused? I know I am
what petition do I sign to get FP to do it?
Don't think anyone has asked FP yet.
i remember a japan web have some classic pictures.i wanna to see them, anyone have them?the pictures are inside classic.not the schematic.
nobody can help???????
Hey Bill... the second build works??
I am from brazil and this will be my project for the vacation... when you speak in flip-floped means I have to do a mirror on the circuit board ???
I am confusing...
You have some observations to a new builder??
Thanks
Sorry for the confusion. I'm not sure what I was talking about.....it was a year ago. I'm pretty sure I was not talking about mirroring the layout. I should be ok as is.
Ok my mess I understand now...
But your have some tips for this build... some mods to the people who want to build this clone??
Another some questions:
In your build you add an extra 39p cap between tl027 pins 1 and 2 because it squel??
For more gain you break the conection of C16 and add a jumper from R27 to the pin 8 of TL072...
This is correct??
Your build works nice?? This is a good project ?? Have you tested with a bass??
Thanks for your time
It's a fairly difficult project due to the number of componets and specially the off board wiring. I like mine very much but have never tried it with a bass or compared it to an original unit.
any updates?
i'm gonna build one following this schem:
Sansamp Classic Schem (http://electric-sound.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/sansamp_classic.gif)
which seams to be verified!! (on another forum i read 2 post that told with this schem it sounds like the original).
plus i've done a layout which you can download here (it's still not verified but it should be fine):
Sansamp Classic Project ZIP (http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/25/1457713/SansampClassic_Project_Rev1.1.zip)
Nice layout Gila.
thank you Bill, I just worked it out from a layout i found on a japanese website
good news: finally i got all the components and this evening i'll start with the build.
i'll let you know when i'll got something working/sounding
Good luck for the build. I have an original but it does not work. I'll start to debug it asap and if I cannot get it to work I'll build a new one from Your layout to the original box. Thanks for the layout !

Is it me or the first link for the schem. do not work ?
Is it the same schem. as the one in the zipped file ?
Thanks
Franc.-Hugo
To get the top link to work you have to copy it and paste it straight into the URL address bar, or whatever it's called.
OK, it worked.
Thanks Gila and Slacker ! :)
I toughted (is it how it is spelling) the schem. was more complex...
F-H
yep the schem in the zip is the same as the one of the link :icon_wink:
today i finished (almost) to populated the board (I'm mad, i'm building this on perfboard!!!), i noticed the diode 1N4148 it's wrong in the layout. you should wired in between +9V and GND!!!!
here it's a suggestion for a better and right placement of D3 and C26 in my layout:
so the work in progress is at this point:

whish me luck for the wiring x_X'....
Removed: sorry I was on the wrong page...
Since the original SansAmp came out, we've seen the arrival of all manner of amp simulators, even on dirt cheap practice amps you can buy at Radio Shack and stuff from Behringer and others.
So, my question is: Is it still worth it to attempt making a SansAmp anymore, in light of all the things that can be economically purchased which try to do the same thing? Accuracy of emulation aside, are there sounds the SansAmp makes that make it worth one's time and money to either buy or build, or has that time passed?
I've never played one, so I ask the question in all sincerity. I have no idea or bias as to what the answer ought to be. I just know that there are a whole lot more boxes/devices with amp-model settings now than there were when the original was released, and as time marches on our criteria for deciding that an emulation is "accurate" start to shift.
http://home.thezone.net/~sreid/nirvana/equip.htm
Perhaps a questionable answer would be: what song-record Nirvana recorded with the sansamp and figure out if it is worth it (?)
the sansamp is something mithological to me and that why i'm building it.
i hope i'll work as it should.
btw another work in progress pic:
btw kurt used one live during the In Utero tour as main distiortion box!
Yeah. I'm not challenging whether it does something useful or desirable. And judging by how many people swore by it for a number of years, I don't doubt that it has a rightful place in the history of pivotal boxes. I'm just wondering if what people expect it to do for them, now some years after it originally came out, is the sort of thing that can actually be done "better" by a bunch of other things out there now.
Well, perhaps being enthusiast about building it is just a good reason for building it. And enthusiasm is generally a good thing. Perhaps it would be a better box to study stage-by-stage than just build and throw in the Hammond box but, let not discourage those who are on the road to sonic "Nirvana".

finally i finished it following my project and it sounds awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i only have a little problem with DIP switch 7 but the rest is sounding awesome and great!!! a really wonderfull distortion device
rock'n'roll!!!! :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:
Very nice work, Gila!
looking at the pics i've done of the perfboard, i realized why the dip switch nr.7 works wrong, but it's only a little mistake made by myself, nothing to worry about.
otherwise you can take my project as VERIFIED, and build your own Sansamp Classic without any problem!!!
Great job on this project, Gila!! I'll will add it to my build list.
I made the Sansamp Classic using Gila_Crisis pcb layout and am having trouble. I get no noise out of it, works in bypass. So I started using a audio scope, and get noise into the gate of Q1, but nothing out of the source. I took the common wires off of the 3 way switch and just tried to see if I get anything out of the buffered out, nothing. So I connected the input onto R15, bypassing the input buffer, and I get noise. It is a shorted sound. I hooked up the audio scope again, and get clean sound into pin 3 of IC1a, but shorted noise out of pin 3. I have checked the pcb with a DMM, and have found no shorts. Not sure what to try next???
Just read a little article from RG on if pedal does not work. And when I measure everything, here are the voltages:
Q1
Drain 7.93v
Gate 4.183v
Source 0v
IC1
pin 1 4.381v
Pin 2 4.58v
Pin 3 3.67v
Pin 4 0v
pin 5 4.34v
Pin 6 4.38v
Pin 7 4.41v
Pin 8 7.93v
IC2
Pin 1 4.386v
Pin 2 4.386v
Pin 3 4.357v
Pin 4 7.91v
Pin 5 4.373v
Pin 6 4.383v
Pin 7 4.382v
Pin 8 4.36v
Pin 9 4.24v
Pin 10 4.25v
Pin 11 0v
Pin 12 4.354v
Pin 13 4.383v
Pin 14 4.359v
All are close, maybe input 1 on IC1 is off?
And reading his description, I have to hit the strings hard to get any output (and again this is bypassing the input buffer, get no sound with buffer connected) and the sound is shorted sounding or gated.
I have been working on this to get it to work. And gone as far as removing all switches, and most of the input buffer. When this was all together, I had the controls cranked and barely got any noise. If I hit the strings hard I got the noise but sounded shorted, gated sounding. When I turned the volume control I get a crackle sound (crackle not okay). Now with switches removed, and input buffer still the same problems.
I am still getting almost 1 volt lower on my first stage of IC1 (see previous post). Does anyone have any voltage readings? Should these pins all be close to the same voltage? What what effect the voltage for that first stage?
Thanks
Rob
GILA HI! any soundclips? how does it sound? compare to SansAmp gt2?
Thanks!

Hey guys........
i know this thread is a little old but...
took the liberty of painstakingly Labeling The schem as seen in bill's pics (according to pcb and layout) thought this might help... i couldn't find a parts list for the layout anywhere..... until i get around to posting it somewhere, if you want a copy email me @ fecalma100@aol.com and i'll send it to ya.... :)
Hi !
Mine doesn't work too...
Now it's working..
Bad IC placement :icon_redface:
