Does anyone know where I can get some different enclosures, like round ones or some other crazy shape. I'm looking for something out of the ordinary rather than just the hammond style boxes I've been using
a look at the pictures thread would be a good start, but i am always on the lookout for potential stuff- places like hardware stores, electronics stores, military surplus stores, target, even swap meets. Whenever i'm at a store i'm scanning everything for its potential to be an enclosure.
I found two really cool sloped oil covers for a vintage honda motorcycle engine last year at a vintage bike swap meet, and also found a really neat wooden coffin at the local discount store at halloween, i just had to pry the plastic vampire out that was glued to the bottom. I scored diamond plate from the scrap bin at work and bent an enclosure for a rack mount BBE sonic maximizer. Ebay is also a good place to browse when you have free time to kill, like at work ;D
Someone on here was making round enclosures, i think they were in a post in the for sale section.

A lot of people like to make their stuff look futuristic, but I like to make mine look like something you'd find in your grandmother's house :)
I really like that. The "grandmother's house" aesthetic is great. The wood knobs kinda look like they came off an old dresser.
I feel so uncreative.
I will look for better junk to save for alternative uses, technology recycling, but I will have to do something with all the krap currently hoarded.
I have a boatload of weird cannisters I saved when I was into building pinhole cameras & never used a single one.
Thanks for the ideas...I think I even have a lamp base I thought would be good for something.

Hello All,
These peculiar stomboxes are not only funky but also funny as well - it's not so easy to do so - very good ideas here !
I have made some - with less originality, I must confess - but the goal was the same.
Here are my Tin-Box pedals (Si and Ge fuzz, booster, overdrive...) :
This one is a little more strange as it uses a C-114 WWII Signal Corp. box (8mm thickness die-cast zamak enclosure).
I called it the Sbrodj Fuzz - it's a modified version of the Shin-Ei FY-2, with an additional output stage :
A+!
That Octopsu is FANTASTIC. The name, the design, everything.
The Sbrodj Fuzz is really cool too.
Yes - the OctoPSU reminds me a Trilobite, from the mesozoic era - good idea, indeed !
https://www.juniorgeo.co.uk/images/trilobite-model.jpg
A+!
I love the OctoPSU - but I am going for something a little more conspicuous. Imagine building this into your pedalboard:
This is the Low-voltage supply. And yes, voltage is set by a variac:
And the rear view:
And if you are operating a tube stompbox (and I don't mean Tube Screamer), this is the high-voltage supply, also with voltage set by variac:
And the rear view. Sort of reminds me of "Gunga Dinh" by Kipling
"The uniform he wore
Was nothing much before
And rather less than half of that behind"
And here's the kicker: I got these power supplies for $5 each! I am a member of the London Vintage Radio Club (London Ontario, not London England) and I picked this up at one of the annual fleamarket sales. They had come from a vocational school where they were used as teaching aids. I need fuses for the HV supply and a line cord for the LV supply. Just don't let your fans storm the stage and change the variac settings!

these are simply great and I'm thinking about using my cat's food cans for tiny projects.
(http://www.zetaesse.com/images/gourmetgoldok.jpg) :icon_mrgreen:
the only problem is how to close and shield the bottom without doing a mess... how did you do it?
You can buy plastic lids for putting on half-finished cans of food or whatever - that'd dp the trick - check out a local hardward store :)
Well I thought at plastic caps but wanted something more resistant...
I was thinking about straightening and resoldering the orignial cap in 2 or 3 points ;D maybe preventing led & holder from melting down somehow :icon_mrgreen:
I thought I had posted these pics already in this thread, but guess not...
Hi neurino & Fishface,
The caps used in my TinBoxes comes from other tinboxes or glassboxes, like coffee (in France : Ricoree, Malongo), mustard (Maille), baby food, etc... Thanks to a rather good normalisation in the tin box diameter sizes, you can often find the matching cover. Sometimes you have to wander in the supermarket... You should easily find a suitable cover for the Gourmet box, indeed. A nice + in the formula : replacing the battery is instantaneaous (more easy than soldering a metal cap - forget it if it's aluminum, indeed).
In fact, plastic caps doesn't lack resistance, as they are underneath and doesnt support any effort, and if you need some shielding, simply put an alu or brass foil glued in it. The resistance problem comes from the tinbox itself, as they are not intended for that use and last longer than the product they have contained inside : I mean that this kind of enclosure is not suitable for "heavy feets"... Otherwise, you should reinforce it with an underneath metal disc - but if you are a "reasonable foot stomper" then simply a large washer around the FSW should be convenient.
A+!

Nothing wrong there. In a pro studio with a 48 channel SSL console, I found one of the meter driver boards wrapped in a plastic bag, sealed with gaffa tape and left hanging behind an equipment rack :)

It was supposed to be a tiny 2-handled pot transformed into an Uglyface, but I unfortunately hadn't stumbled on THIS TOPIC (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=67742.20) by the time it turned my Unibit red hot. I managed to drill 2.5 holes out of 10. I decided to stop halfway through the 3rd hole when my drill couldn't take it any more. Its amazing what a 10$ hand drill can endure ;D As for the Unibit, I might have to buy a new one... The steel filings were glowing red and there was this awful smell coming from the enclosure (or the drill!) If I can find a way to drill it properly, sand off its outer coating, and paint it red, I think I could make a fine fuzz pedal
I ended up putting my Uglyface in a Tupperware container. It's one hell of an...
octave down...
autowah... umm... migraine-worsening-fuzz box? :icon_twisted:
I was curious about this, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Lego pedal enclosures! I haven't actually built any pedals, aside from an A/B/Y switch, and a true bypass box, but I figured I'd get my mind going for some later projects, assuming that I'm any good at this pedal building thing...
Still trying to find ways to mount everything in it, since Lego's all square, but you may be able to secure washers in that you can attach the jacks and everything to, no glue or drilling required, like I did (badly mind you, and I didn't have any spare jacks to see if they fit).

What'd you use for a stomp switch? That enclosure is a harddrive right? I've thought about using one myself, but it appears to be too shallow to make the stomp switch etc fit.
yep, it's a hard drive. you may use a regular dpdt or 3pdt stomp switch, just flip the bottom cover, and there's a mounting hole for the motor at the bottom, keep it open to save more space for button's legs.
it was tricky to install input and output jacks, i used these:
