Title: 666 Competition
Post by: frequencycentral on June 07, 2010, 05:26:17 PM

Slade and I will decide on the winner. The judges decision is final. No bribes will be accepted.......!

The winner wins a free '666' themed Murder One.

@ Aron: Can we make this thread a sticky until the competition is over and judged?

ITS MINE !! GO AWAY < I WANT < I WANT IT < I WANT IT
Does the pedal have to be an original circiut ?
Or can it be a clone ? hacked together/stomp on/ fuzz wah built in a stuffed piece of road kill (damn I gave away my secret  :icon_twisted:)
I mean ,is the competition the effect or the enclosure its in ?

It can be a clone or an original design. It can be a booster with only one pot, or a super giant pedal, the design and layout is what counts.

Good idea - added to the rules. But think form over function. This is being judged on looks alone.

Can it be a design made before the competition but not built yet? I've got a tube pedal that I haven't built yet but would love to enter, after modifying it for some darker tones as well. Is this legal?

And Deadastronaut, what about gingers? They have no souls  :P

I have a pretty good idea for an entry, but there is no way I'll get it done in time for the contest. :(

So instead, can I suggest that whoever wins the Murder One consider getting together with Rick and Slade to come up with another contest whose prize would be the winning entry of this contest? It would be great to have a continuing community-run contest to encourage people to push their own limits.

Just a thought...

I estimate that page 666 is 2 months away, maybe a little less.

Surely 8 weeks is time enough for deciding on the build, ordering parts and building! Shall we have another competition based on the date that the Pictures! thread reaches page 666?

I don't think the winner should have to part with their winning entry - kind of defeats the object for me - all that effort just to give it away - the competition has to be no strings attached. But it would be great if someone else did 'sponsor' a future build-off. Tell you what, being as my favourite chip is the LM13700, I promise to sponsor another competition when the Pictures! thread reaches page 13700.  :D

Family obligations and home repair take precedence over pedal building. If I don't get the downstairs bathroom in working order before her family visits, she'll never let me build another pedal again...heh! Ah, the life of a DIYer. :)

Oh, I totally agree. It was just a thought in case the winner decided they wanted to do it. I didn't mean to make it seem like I was suggesting that it should be a condition of the contest. The winner obviously will be getting a nice prize, so they might be more likely to extend the generosity like you and Slade. :)

Does it have to be evil themed etc? Like, what are you guys looking for? is it things like build quality, progress, use, etc etc etc?

I started on something yesterday that I'd be inclined to enter, but if i'm up against people who's etching skills are win cos they've been building pedals for ages, i'm screwed. :(

  • Your pedal must be 'demonic'

Evil themed scores mucho points. Slade and I hope to be able to judge each on their own merits. Anyone who's work we know who has really 'upped their game' would have a better chance than a 'top' builder who produces 'more of the same' - so known 'top' builders would have to better their own best. Essentially you're competing against yourself. Stunning originality would count for a lot too, so if you produce a ProCo Rat with the 3pdt mounted up the butt of a real dead rat, with flashing red LEDs mounted in the eye sockets and with it's little furry limbs shrouding the pot shafts - you'd be bound to win. But that's my idea so you can't use it.  :icon_mrgreen:

We're only looking for:

- Original 666 themed designs
- Innovative finishing techniques

The rest is up to you, just like Rick said: Essentially you're competing against yourself. So don't worry for the other guys skills, just do your best, the prize can fall over any head here.

hey slade/frequencycentral, even though you guys aren't allowed enter, are you going to do a build for it? i know there's a demonic murder one up for grabs, but what about slade? can we expect a showcase piece with extra added angry?

  • Your finished pedal must also be posted on this thread on the same day
So its fairly simple.
You have 24 hrs after the pictures thread hits page 666 to post your builds there (irregardless what page it hits before that day is over) and in this thread, two posts in two threads per entry.
(I hope I said that right)

Quick question. I've a few jumpers on the underside of my board for this. For the whole manditory gut shot thing, does the underside have to be shown? I really dont want to have to take out all the screws......

I am gonna particapate ,dont expect to win,but what the hay.
My entry will be my first non-Rayco enclosure, and my first to use graphics/labeling of any kind.
So given its based on the builders past builds I might have a small chance.  ::)

Seeing as all my "original" ideas have already been done and displayed in the picture thread, well dont expect greatness from me.
I have decided to just follow through with my intents, and revel in the greatness of others.

I'm 666% sure trad3mark will participate, but there are many guys (and maybe some girls....... yes..... maybe.... in fact I hope there are some!.....) that suddenly appear here posting such impressive builds.

Gentlemen, yesterday Slade gave me a sneak preview of the artwork for the prize. It struck terror into my heart and gave me nightmares all last night. It's guaranteed to bequeath ill fortune and doom unto it's owner. But first it has to make the 12000 km trip from Chile to the UK for me to build the amp into it - that's if the plane survives the journey and is not struck by thunder, lightning, hellfire and brimstone on the way.

slade you would be 666% correct that i am participating. I think i was one of the first posts in this thread, and through excitement and determination, i've worked on this every day since then. Tomorrow, i'm collecting the knobs; the finishing piece of this. So many late nights, and 2 rebuilds later, it's finally nearly finished. Now that i'm getting a chest infection, thankfuly i've no more soldering to do, cos i'm sure the fumes wouldn't help. In anycase, I cannot wait to let it out. It has literally destroyed me. It'll be my last pedal for a few months, but it was worth it.

This pedal, this competition is truly sinister. But soon, there will be...

I wont. Don't worry.

Out of interest for frequencycentral/Slade, I know that you guys are judging it, but how's about, apart from an overall winner, having 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. Sort of like "Honourable Mention" even though they won't win anything. If you're giving out "Honourable Mention" you could give that to a bunch of the good entries.

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

And the pics thread suddenly took off, alot faster than was originally thought...
So I may not even make a single entry,I had hoped to post two...
If the AC is fixed tonight I will try to finish the first one,not happy with the graphics but,not enough time to redo em.
Plus I have got several songs I have to learn by Saturday(correctly...),or I am likely to get cut from my new band (paying gigs) :icon_eek:  (Zepplin tribute band, and I play Page)
I will be lucky to assemble it before the the thread hits 666  ::)

It's getting close to page 666.  So the rules say that the entries must be posted on the same day that the thread reaches page 666.  But by whose time?  I mean, if it reaches page 666 at quarter of 12:00 midnight, then we only have 15 minutes to post?  And, say, Germany is 6 hours ahead of where I live, so they missed the boat?  Or is it "within 24 hours" of the thread reaching 666?  Just curious because it is on page 665.  Yikes!

  • You must post your finished pedal on the Pictures! thread on page 666 or any of the following pages providing it is posted on the same day that the Pictures! thread reaches page 666
  • Your finished pedal must also be posted on this thread on the same day

Being as this is an international forum, when the Pictures! thread hits 666 it will herald the start of the international day, so we'll say that you have 24 hours to post from when the Pictures! thread hits 666.

This forum has 20 posts per page (I think), as I write we are at reply #13287 on the Pictures! thread, so reply #13300 will the first post on page 666. FU>=<@&$$ck
I'm gone miss this competition

Just because my supplier didn't have the correct parts in stock and I had to order from abroad before I left for my vacation. Back home I have my contribution for the contest, "The boogie man" an almost ready 1590A Dr Boogey just waiting for some 9mm pots and some caps that lay waiting in my local post office and I will not be back for a week. The original plan was to have everything ready set go to publish at the right moment. And when that didn't work out I had hoped that the 666 moment would not come for yet another week. >:(

May the evil spirit linger over those who take part in this competition and may their souls burn in hell :icon_twisted:

Well well... good luck every one and may the bets (most evil) entry win :D

Ok evil evil people. this is my first entry. I'll be posting another one shortly...

Cannon. Based on the Viole(n)t Rams Head version of the Big Muff, Cannon has 4 x GT404B Russian Germanium transistors, and 4 x D18 Russian Germanium Diffusion Diodes. It's as loud and as angry as you would expect a germanium fueld, vintage based big muff to be. It's a little bigger than the size of a "Little Big Muff" or the current tone wicker model. And now it's got a bit more of a sinister look to it. ;)

As you can see from the guts, it's a big vero. It's wired on gold-plated vero, instead of the usual copper. It's party-piece is in the guts. I've heard of people "Floating" boards before, to avoid them grounding off the case. With this build, i wanted to try something else. So the board isn't floated, it's suspended.

Here's mine. I call it "The Bat Boost" and it's a full-range boost with "high" and "low" tone controls that gives me a Black Sabbath kind of tone. I have NOTHING on the pedals designed so far, but maybe I get points for creativity? I hand painted the graphics (and designed it myself) in glow-in-the-dark paint, the eyes light up, I used recycled "mojo" parts from random broken stuff (back from the dead!!), and the Q1 transistor is part number 666!! I kid you not! I tried to get a picture of it, but it just comes out all blurry (including taking a clear picture not zoomed in and trying to zoom in after the fact with Photoshop). And this IS my first pedal that I've actually designed and painted the enclosure for myself, and I think that comes into play in the voting??? Thanks, this was fun!

And so the time has come to fight against the great evil. To absolve sinners. To create a new path.

It is time to bring Redemption.

A hybrid overdrive running on a single 12AX7, and three J201's. It has 5 controls, from right to left, Texture - Input Caps; Tone - Filter based on the BMP filter; Gain - From crunchy boost to redeeming fury; Volume - Quiet to oh no my face has just been ripped off; Density - Output Caps. This thing is now replacing any overdrive i have had in my setup. The crunchy is vintage, the fury is powerful, and the tone, set just right, is the perfect blend of treble and bass. Wired up on Gold Plated vero, with a compact and organised board. This build was a tough one to endure, but it was worth every second.

That's me done.

man, it was a pain to wire inside that skull !!

Switch that turns the fuzz is on top of the skull and will also light the eyes. There are 2 pots, one on each ear to control tone. The switch in the nose flips between 2 different diodes that severely change the sound.

Pots in the ears control tone and the switch in the nose flips between 2 different diodes with very different tones

Doesn't matter that the 666 was written in Greek. The book of Relevations  was not written in Latin, but Greek. So it's historically accurate to use Greek.

Poor skull, you have to stomp it right on the nose! (Or where the nose had demonically decayed into a footswitch).
Not even a metal box, now that's demonic :-D.

lol love the skull!!

I would have done something similar... had this competition been announced before my trip to Italy/Greece, I would have picked up a goat skull from the winding mountain roads and smuggled it back (more mojo, right?  :icon_twisted: ... unless I get the customs glove  :icon_lol: )

Would have even had time to enter... then again I could have whipped something up in less time than I spend here procrastinating  :-[

Anyone willing to start a 777 competition?

With this thread getting almost 6000 views, seven entries is piss poor IMO (not sore just wanted to see more entries)
I think had the pics thread not been bumped so hard the last two weeks,we would have seen closer to 20 or 30 entries.
Still nice work ,
My favorite hands down is entry two the horns just set it off.

that is such a beast of a build. Unbelievable work on that amp Slade/frequencycentral. That black and red is so amazing, and even the names for the controls as Blood and Water...

Cheers for running the competition by the way. It certainly does provide good fear/drive to up my own standard.

First of all, thanks to everyone who took part, it's been really enjoyable and they are all great looking builds. However, there can be only one..................

............but before the one, the unholy trinity that is the top 3, in order posted:

These are my picks too.
I would vote for Bre first place ,the top one for second, followed by Joe Hart for 3rd.
But its a tough call glad I dont have to make it.
One could even vote Joe for first if it was based soley on the builders past builds. The only thing that makes me call him 3rd is the bat boost isnt as Evil as the other two entries.
and the Bre build is hands down the most original and evil looking of the bunch.

The Murder One 666 version is very cool, even more so than I imagined it would be.
Nice work (as always) Slade !!!

But given your line of reasoning ,It could have been said "only those who donated the prize would have the right to complain about the low number of entries".

After seeing the quality of the builds entered I am hardly upset I didnt make the deadline,as mine wouldnt have had a chance anyway.
Even had it been finished completely and entered in time.
I just would have liked to seen more builds,I like looking at what others imiginations can produce.

Like I said early on in this thread...I will just revel in the excellence of what others can do where I can't.

Mine too but it's not against the rules.
I'm not the greatest artist so I used google. If you look through the whole pictures thread most pedals with "real" pictures (not just lines or circles) got the inspiration from google picture search I think :D
Rick wrote "It can be a clone or an original design. It can be a booster with only one pot, or a super giant pedal, the design and layout is what counts."
So in my opinion it does only matter if the pedal looks like a nightmare. But I don't want to justify myself. Even if the lime squeezer pedal from the pictures thread would have won the competition(wich looks very ccol) it would have been the decision of the judges. If I lose I congratulate the winner and freak out because I have a very cool sounding loser pedal:D

:icon_mrgreen:

yes, I agree..mounting in a standard box is cliche. then you'd be just judging on who can etch the best picture...hahhahahaaha

@ TUCKSTER /jURGEN
"I" think yours IS the best entry hands down.
But that is just IMO...
What counts is what Rick and Slade think.
What you did is far,far harder than just fading a pic and printing it out.
The detail in your etching is superb and the horn tips make it the shizzle REALLY,then you add in the knobs,well...
The only thing I would change about your build is the FS washer,a copper washer would have been much nicer.
Still very sweet build.
I now have an entire folder full of artwork, that I downloaded from the web I agree ,almost everyone uses art they download.
Even mine was taken from the web,But I just used parts and hand drew alot of it (mostly the border and crosses)
I also think Joes is really good, especially knowing what the majority of his pedals look like.

I dont recall ever seeing any of Galego's builds, but the two he entered are excellent, well made and very Pro looking.

I think the toughest part lies ahead for the judges,I dont envy them having to decide a winner.
All 3 are winners IMO,and the entries from 87% were really good too, must have been hard to narrow it down to the 3 they did.
I love the knobs on the cannon build.
Title: Re: 666 Competition
Post by: Brymus on August 05, 2010, 05:54:14 PM
FWIW this was to be my second entry, the control labeling is gonna be black copper clad etching ala John Lyons and the artwork is going to be done by my friends wife(she is out of town on vacation)
the bypass LED goes in the emblem which was a pain to drill and then countersink for the LED bezel which holds it to the box.
The channel indicators are to be installed in a light bar ala Renegadrian and two different colors will distiguish which channel is active
The hammer tone proved difficult for decals.
Its called Gemini Witch and is a heavily modded BMP cicuit.

Sometimes I just need some motivation to get movin'. Maybe I should hire someone to give me deadlines and hold me to them for all my projects  :icon_rolleyes:

The entries were greaat by the way. Loved the skull & 3D horns, unique bits! And the prize is wonderfully (as always slade) etched. Wish you all the best for the final prize!

Also it seemed that alot of people were going to enter but didn't have time... dunno if thats slackin' on your part fellas or just too close a deadline (cause it WAS pretty long). Double check that if this comes round again, maybe

Gratz, tuckster! That's an awesome pedal. I really dig the SM work. and the black resist.

I still got the circuit I was working on only about half working... I shoulda gone with CMOS. Was building an Octave Down Bass Synth with adjustable waveforms, emphasis on creating sawtooth top with trapezoidal bottom for that deep sound with metallic overtonetones.

It was great fun to run the comp with Fernando. This really was just a one-off though, as sadly neither of use can afford to give stuff away for free regularly. Another competition would be fun at some point in the future, but run on a different basis. Here's my idea: a fixed term competition (say three months) which entrants have to subscribe to (say $10 per entry) within the first month, the prize fund to be held in a paypal account, the winner takes all. Not sure how the comp would be themed, or who would judge it? Only problem I can see is people falling out when money is involved.

Yeah, apparently Slade is the master of the fine etch, but often gets hopelessly lost walking to the post office.  ::)

They were included on the last batch of pots I ordered from Tayda: http://www.taydaelectronics.com/servlet/StoreFront

Ah, ok. I knew they had them but they don't have the pots I use and they won't sell them by themselves. Thanks though.

Awesome work as always!

That's exactly what I was wondering... I skipped ordering pots from Tayda for my girlfriend's Angel, and wish I hadn't... I need those quite a bit, they look nice!

Awesome job on the build.. 'tis a beautiful beast!

Hi
Some times things take a little longer than you expected. This project was meant for this competition. But a slow delivery of the small pot's crashed that plan. But better late then never. So here folks, meet The "Boogie Man" Its, as you might suspect a Dr. Boogie only in a slight smaller costume than you usually find him.

The paper decals is to be schanged for water slides soon.

Yes I know. I have checked it and the spelling is a little confusing ???

From wikipedia "A bogeyman (also spelt bogieman, boogeyman or boogieman) is an amorphous imaginary being used by adults to frighten children into behaving. The monster has no specific appearance, and...."

Sounds brutal  :icon_mrgreen:. The foot switch looks awfully close to the knobs, is there a chance that you accidentally hit them?

Yes very much so I would say that the risk is about 100%
But practical was not one of the criteria for the competition  ;D
