Could a CS-3 easily be modded to the CS-2 specs or is there more differences other than caps and resistors?  I'm just curious why the CS-2 is much more sought out than the CS-3 and if it is worth me trying to get a CS-3 cheaply and then modding it.

Just curious since someone offered me a CS-3 for my CE-5....... :?:

They are completely different designs. The CS-2 uses a transconductance OPamp for gain control like a dynacomp, ross, etc. The CS-3 uses a That Corp. VCA chip that was designed and licensed by dBx.

I would be curious to compare the CS-2 with the CS-3 with the same set-up.

I have a CS-3 but never tried a CS-2. And I know they designed the CS-3 because they couldn't build the CS-2 anymore because the opamp was not available anymore.

But Boss says that the CS-3 is better sounding than the CS-2...

Who should I believe? The rumors, Boss, or my ears?

FWIW,  I have a Boss CS-2, Dyna Comp, and Saffron Squeeze.  I like the CS-2 the best.  It just compliments my Strat and Super Reverb a lot better than the other two.  My second favorite is the Dyna Comp, but it has a little too much treble.

I "sat in" playing with a country band and the guitar player had the CS-3/TS9/Peavy amp combination and I didn't really care for it.  It wasn't bad, just not as good "to me" as I'm used to.
