DIY TS9/808: what's your favorite Diode Clipping set up?

Hi there,

Everything is in the title. Which Diode Clipping set up sounds the best to you. Asym Ge, sym Si, combinaison of both?

Two of my favorites
d1: 1n4001 > LED
D2: 1N4001

D1: 1N4001
d2: 1N4001 > 1N4001

connections are in series.

I don't care for germaniums, but if I use them in a ts9, I will use a 1n4148 > 1n270 in series, or even 2 sets of 1n270 in series like this:

d1: 1n270 > 1n270
d2: 1n270 > 1n270

I tried almost everything (Ge, silicon, symmetrical, asymmetrical, diode +       resistor ) and finally:

D1 -> 1n4148
D2 -> 1n4148

D1- 1N4001
D2- 1N914/1N4148 or a pair of  these = nice "crunch" :D

D3+D4 -> 1N4148 + 1N4148

or

D1+D2 -> 1n4001 + 1N4001
D3+D4 -> 1N4148 + 1N4148

1M pot with 15k in series with 120p.

RC = 4k7k + 220nF or  10k + 330nF (to ground not VREF)

I only use it for slight boost with a Strat.  I use another OD or Dist. for the heavier stuff.

Stock basically means "as it came out of the box" or "un-modified"

I like them stock too...actually I have several tubescreamers, all with different mods, or stock!  :oops:  :lol:

I'll 2nd the
D1 1N4001
D2 1N914

with a BB opamp. This sound is quite warm.

I really like the
D1 1N914
D2 1N914 + 1n34 (Ge)

combo. This 2nd combo is warmer, and the asym with smoothness really brings out the 2nd harmonic.

Yup ... I modded one of my SD-1s to an 808 ( close anyways ... ) and put switches in to change the diode config on the fly... I kept coming back to the same old stock setting. :) ...

Hi,

I'm not too sure about the "stock" diode on TS808, meaning the diodes set up on original TS808.

Is it D1 1N4001, D2 1N914?

All stock Japan made TSs I've ever opened had two MA150 Si diodes (in Japan as common as 1N4148 or 1N914 in the US) in the clipping section, as noted in the original schematics.

In the 5-series, built in China most diodes are 1N4148, but that's acc. to the 5-series schems.

Sorry for the really stupid question, can I use 1N400X other than 1N4001? Or 4001 would be preferred?

tonally, makes no difference.
the specs of those are basically the same, except the maximum current and their capacitance, but those capacitances are so small that it doesn't really matter since there is a 100x bigger capacitor in parallel anyways.

1N4001 to 1N4007 are different VOLTAGE sort-outs from the same (original) process.

The current rating sets the diode diameter. Big hose for big flow, or otherwise. The 1N400x are all "1A" diodes.

The voltage rating is like baking cookies soft or hard. You get some too gooey to pick up, others can be used as weapons. Back in 1964 they got a lot of 100+V parts, not many 500+V parts. They sold the low-V parts as '001, the high-V parts as '006 at 2 or 3 times the price of an '001. (The 1,000V 1N4007 came later when they really mastered the process.)

At 9V, the difference between 100V or 1000V rating is super small.

And in this 21st Century, essentially all 1N400x on the market ARE 1N4006 or better; a 100V breakdown would be a sign of a severe problem. They have the process dialed-in so close it makes 900V-1300V parts all day long. Even the back-alley diode foundries.

They mark some of the parts with lower numbers to satisfy purchasing agents working from old plans from days when the '7 really did cost pennies more than the '1.

Buying DIY quantities, get a 10-bag or 100-bag of 1N4007. Any difference in bulk price (for thousands) is swamped by the labor markup on small quantities.
