Now my question is can i use 1/4w zener or should i order 1/2w?

I would guess that a 1/4 Watt would be fine, there are no resistors in the schematic to limit the current through the LEDs, so there must be something in the amp to do that. LED's normally run at a maximum of about 30ma so that means 30ma though the Zener diode, power is current x volts, which gives 5.1 x 0.03 = 0.15 Watts.
The instructions say to use a 1/2 Watt though so unless they are much more expensive or hard to find I would use that.

My take, for the money, just put a 1/2 watt in there and be safe ;o)

I built the same foot switch for a buddy last year using off-the-shelf RS components and plastic enclosure. Used 1/4 watt components and SPST latching switches. Cost less than $15usd (even from RS).

Your schematic Is the same as mine. In the end i've ordered 1/2w 5/1v zener. I'll try it tomorrow on a friends champ. Thanks though.
