Dallas Rangemaster=PNP or NPN ?

has anybody built a NPN version ? and if so, how did it sound ? is there anybody here that can give a comparitive view on both builds ?, the reason I ask, I have some old RCA 2N388's that need some place to hide besides in my cabinet,  they all have an HFE of 75 to 85, if this is a good build I will perf one up tonight. and I know to swap polarity for the NPN build.
