Vacume tube, High Gain multiple tone distortion?

Hey, I've built amps in the past, but no pedals. I have a bunch of 12ax7 tubes laying around... so I was thinking of building a distortion pedal. But I play both blues, and death metal... (I know, I'm wierd)

So, what I'd like is a pedal that uses at least 3 tubes, maybe as many as 6 or 8... and has a switch that alows me to change the value of the cathode resistor and thereby change the amount of clipping that goes on. I need HEAVY clipping for metal and milder clipping for blues.  I'd also like a tone stack in there somewhere... anyone know of any projects like that? Size doesn't matter if it sounds good.

How about this circuit, it uses 3 pentodes and one dual triode at the output.
