It may be advisable for EU members to observe the following small print in the RoHS laws that come into force next year:

"The RoHS (Restriction Of use of certain Hazardous Substances) directive will require that new equipment sold within the European Community from the 1st July 2006, (apart from some exceptions that are still to be confirmed), will not contain any of the following substances in quantities above the prescribed levels in each homogenous material*:

0.01% Cadmium.
0.10% Lead, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium and Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated Diphenyl ethers (PBDE)."

We have been concerned that this legislation will lead to tin-lead solder being replaced by lead-free solder at three times the price by next July. However, the cadmium regulation will also prohibit sales of LDRs in the EU at that time. Experimenters, buy 'em now while you can. Already, various UK suppliers are advising customers to change to silicon photocells. Sadly, these are not drop-in replacements for LDRs by any stretch of the imagination, as they work on completely different principles.

You have been warned...   :icon_mad:

PS LDRs and proper solder have never been cheaper. Stockpile 'em NOW!
