I really hadnt realized it til now but i noticed that on some of my effects i built, when i unplug the guitar cables from the effect and the 9v plug is stll in the led light stays on. i thought that it was supposed to go off as soon as the cables are disconnected.. On the other side of things, when i use a battery and i disconnect the cables, the led turns off as i understand its supposed to--Is this normal?-the led light staying on without the cables connected?

This just means that you're switching only the battery at the input.  Instead, try switching the battery at the DC jack and all power at the input jack.  Then the battery will not drain unless you unplug from the DC jack while keeping your instrument plugged in.
