wiring up power

how to you wire up a pedal for switching between a jack and battery? i know for a battery you connect the negative to one end of the sleeve connection, and the circuits ground to the other half (so they get connected when a jack is inserted, but i dont know how to set it so it disconnects the battery when you insert a dc jack...
