TS Clone - buffer question

I'm still breadboarding my TS clone and I swithced from discrete transistors for the in and out buffers to TL071's (for the build, I will probably use a TL071 to cut down on parts).

The TL071 for the input buffer made a HUGE difference - much cleaner/transparent sound overall and the gain seemed a little better.  I've A/Bed between the output buffer and no output buffer, though, and hear very little difference, if any at all.  What are the consequences of just leaving off the output buffer?  Pros/cons?

I read the "technology of " and Cook your own distortion" articles and they seem to suggest the input and output buffers are superfluous if your clipping and gain stages are well-designed.  Thoughts?

You can leave off the output buffer.  For example, Barber does this in most of their TS type pedals.  I posted a thread on op-amp current capability a few days ago - the current required is miniscule when pushing an amp, so almost any opamp will be able to drive the input of an amp without any problems.
