easyvibe trim pot question

I found a cheapo radioshack trim 1 k but not sure how to place it though. It looks like accodring to the Hollis layout  that its supposed to be this long square shaped trim pot but not mine (mine is kinda round)- I wouldnt think it matteres which way but the middle lug dont fit this layout. Does that matter? I placed a 1.5k resistor there (in a socket) and nothing but sputter. Does that resistor there make that much of a difference? Also- I havnt shielded the led/ldrs. I read here that it will /should still work anyway. I was very carefull as far as soldering goes so I wouldnt think that was a problem.

Any ideas/things to check for?
