built a Noisy Cricket Radio Shack edition with headphone mods, a few questions

first off, it sounds awesome. i bought all of the parts at radio shack and it was pretty cheap. give me vero over those RS boards any day though - I kept making stupid mistakes and then catching them right away. it's probably because i accidentally built it with the board upside down - they're symmetrical on the y axis but not on the x axis!

a few questions:

1. i built it as a headphone amp and it has way too much output. i did a search and found a thread where someone mentioned putting a 10 ohm resistor on the output jack's ground. i did this before even testing it, but it seems odd. shouldn't it go to the other lugs of the output jack so it is resisting the signal that goes to the headphones? also, 10 ohms isn't very much resistance. should i try putting a 1k or 1m resistor going to the tip + sleeve? right now the volume knob is only usable in the lowest 1/10th of it's travel - it's way too loud.

2. the tone knob doesn't seem to do much at all. i'm going to check my wiring to make sure it's correct - it could easily be an error on my part.

3. the gain knob works backwards and doesn't add much gain - it's mostly adding extra volume. i've seen people adding fuzz circuits to their ruby/noisy crickets so maybe it's supposed to be like this. i'll check my wiring again though.

it was a fun build and i highly recommend it! now i need to find a cool housing for it.

i added another toggle to tone the gain down via a 1k resistor to the ring and tip of the output jack. i think it'll still work with a cab but it'll have half the output (stereo jack -> mono). the EQ works but it's subtle and the gain works fine with the 1k resistor in place.
