Our current system encourages and rewards greed but I don't think we will be able to avoid that until human control and population start to contract. One reason why human greed is so prevalent today is the fact that we live in huge communities and can outsource the consequences of our actions to people we don't care about or, under some circumstances, even know about. There is also a feeling of a huge social ladder that stretches out way above us. This gives people of all social classes huge aspirations that, unfortunately, often become greed. Our system encourages competition, but it does so to the point of competition at the expense of others. I am not saying that our society has chosen the worst possible system, or that other systems are necessarily better. Given how bloated modern society has become, I think it will eventually collapse and give way to a society that gives up our speed in technological and corporate progress in favour of one that has less of a social ladder. I think such a system will be created out of necessity, not out of human goodness.
You miss my point. Greed does not exist because society makes it exist. Greed exists because it's a part of human nature. Societies which fail to take that into account or at least allow enough room for it to operate are inherently suicidal in the short term.

It is true that we may currently be suicidal in the long term, but as a pragmatic person, I'd choose that option so I have some room (i.e. time) to work on the end result.

I completely agree that it exists as a part of human nature. I just wanted to say that I think our society encourages and does little to stop greed. No society will eradicate or prevent greed but some may deal with it better than others.

It depends on how you look at it. Without some self interest, expressed either at the individual level or at the hive/swarm/flock/herd/society level, the organism in question simply dies and gives the remaining history of the planet to their more self interested peers. When does self interest (i.e., trying to get enough food, water, shelter, comfort, entertainment, and some level of luxury) become greed? Remember, one man's ceiling is another man's floor. When *we* feel like we want X, we think it is self interest. When someone else looks at that desire (in us, not them!) they see it as greed. That is "what I  :icon_lol:want is necessary. What you want is greed."

Here's a test: are you greedy?

Having answered that, think about how differently your wants would be appraised by Donald Trump, A devout Jain, and a Kalahari bushman.

And you're also missing that the same thing that resides somewhere between enlightened self interest and greed is what drives material progress. Material progress seems to go fastest where we say hands-off and let people get rich if they can stand the work. Before you say material progress is entirely a bad thing, be sure you've lived for a while with impure water, eating only what you can raise or catch/kill, and watching 40-50% of your offspring die before they're 10. Our material progress gives us the luxury to think about how we might define "greed".

Not to mention searching for leftover germanium transistors...  :icon_lol:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Deception does not exist in real life, it is only a figment of perception.
