Tweaking a Dr. Boogie

built a dr boogie a while back and i love it. I use about 1/4 of the gain or a little more as a creamy full lead sound. I end up rolling the treble and presence all the way down and i still find the pedal bright. I find the more i crank the gain the more it compresses and i am happy with the tone. But If the gain is too low even with treble presence all the way down it is too bright.
I figured since i dont use all the gain on tap anyway ill try swapping the first j201 for an mpf102. now the gain stays just under 1/2 way (yeah a pretty big difference) but no significant change in tone. But now there is a lot more white noise (backround hiss) than with the j201.  ??? I tried a couple mpf102 with the same result. even went back to the j201 to make sure i wasnt fooling myself.
So my questions are-
1) whats up with the mpf102 being noisier?
2) any suggestions to warm up the sound a bit?
3)I am also curious about putting mpf102 in later stages. what effect would it have on the tone?

There are a few adjustments that you need to do when changing the Jfets.
I would increase R2 a little if you use an mpf102 to perhaps 3k9 to 4k7 and re-bias at the drain.
You could increase C5 a little to pull out some high stuff - maybe 220pf or higher.

I built one without the tone stack and at the output to volume pot I used a "ROG" type
filter of 15k in line with 2n2 to ground and another 15k in line with 2n2 to ground.
Sounded a bit more "amp like" to me.
Tuning/bias on these circuits has as much to do with source resistors as drain resistors too !

Have you re-biased the Fet you replaced?
