0.050" pin spacing (SOIC) was bad enough, and then I just found some chips I needed that were actually 0.5 mm (SSOP) pin spacing! But as hard as the PCB can be, prototyping with these tiny parts is even more a pain. So I just thought I'd pass on what I think is a really great find. http://www.futurlec.com has a pretty nice collection of little breakout boards for just this purpose, here http://www.futurlec.com/SMD_Adapters.shtml . Two things I really like are (1) a lot of these boards have SOIC footprints on one side and TSSOP on the other, so you don't have to buy two different types to fill out your collection. The other grate thing is (2) the prices!!!  After seeing so many companies offer breakouts like this, for several dollars each, as if to say "too bad... you KNOW you need it, so shut up and pay!", Its a really nice change to see these little breakouts at prices of around 50ยข give or take! Check it out!
