does anyone know of a replacement for a 2n5457? A transistor that has near the same qualities that is a bit more common

Well, without knowing what circuit it's in or its application, it's very hard to say. But in general, the following work at least closely in gain circuits and have similar resistance across them for variable resistor purposes:

BF245A, 2N5952 (backwards), possibly 2N5485, and 2SK30 (dgs pinout).

In JFET boosters and distortions I most commonly see 2N5457 and J201. So for that purpose the J201 might be a interesting alternative.

I have found J202 JFETs to be nearly a drop in replacement for 2N5457s with regard to Vp and Idss (both of which I measure using the Runoffgroove JFET measurement technique as described in their Fetzer article).

ok great, I'm just trying to find transistors that can work from a supplier that is close to me. so far, one of them is on their stock list. great :D
