Geofex voltage double with transistor switching... how does it work?

Crayon on matchbook: if you load TL07x at 30V with 2K and push it near clipping, the total supply current nearly doubles.

In guitar-chain work you would "never" have a load as low as 2K. At a more typical >50K the dynamic current is near zero compared to the idle current.

Well, I replaced the LT1054 circuitry with a simple cascaded voltage multiplier, wired it all up, and...

I can still hear the clicking.  WTH?  Like before, the noise is present regardless of whether the effects loop is in the signal chain (I have it wired to a DPDT switch for true bypass).  So just powering it is what's causing the clicking.

My only guess is that the NE555 really doesn't like anybody messing with that power supply.  I don't know what else could possibly be causing that noise.

Maybe I could stick the LT1054 on the 18v line, after the 7818?
