Like the Tillman, you could put the JFET and everything connected to the gate and source in the guitar and everything connected to the drain in a separate box (that would not be a stompbox because it would always have to be there and would never be swapped out for anything different) and you would have a guitar where the drain resistor is essentially the output impedance of the guitar.  The gate filtering is the only difference from a Tillman in circuit topology.

as this "echoplex preamp" is still so popular, when it really isn't the preamp of an echoplex at all.

the "preamp" of an echoplex is just a simple buffer.

what this is is the tape saturation amp of the echoplex, what's used to drive the signal into the tape.

in an actual echoplex, this circuit isn't actually part of the audio path ;)
