Pots, why have a tab on them(If it's flat mounted)

So i get this kit from General Guitar Gadgets. The pots for the compressor kit have tabs on them, like if it was meant to be counter sink in to a softer material to prevents them from moving. But since this is flush mount inside a metal box, what are the tabs for?

Keeps the pots from twisting. Some folks drill smaller holes in addition to.

The general build instructions from General Guitar Gadgets tell you to break the tab off with a pair of pliers.  Good practice in general.  Save drilling an extra hole to accommodate​ those sorts of tabs until much later in your building hobby.

Its not hard to use these tabs- drill the holes for the pots first, place the pot upside down and mark where the tab center is, then drill it. It really helps when you have multiple pots in close proximity and you really don't want them to be misaligned. Alternatively, you could break off the tab and use a dab of epoxy to keep the pots in the orientation you need.

or mount the pots, with their tabs, on a sub-panel.

If you break them off get some inner-toothed star washers to fit over the bushing inside the box. Tightening the nut, spinning the pot and snapping the wiring is no fun, or shorting out a lug on the pot next to it...

You don't have to drill all the way through the enclosure to engage the lug but if you don't go through, you'll need to file down the lug some until the pot sits flat in the enclosure.

And if you do remove them just grab them with some pliers and twist and snap, if you try cutting they become lethal projectiles.
