Switches...

Just about everybody sells that sort. Not the hardiest switches - don't get the solder tags too hot! Better find metal frame open wafer types for longer lasting switching.

I'm not sure if I should be encouraging one of those annoying ba$tard things, but if you're going to take the "concept" further, then that's ok. Go on, give it a VCF.
...and ain't the Hacienda closed?

Kipper4

Haha that Hacienda spirit lives on though.

Thanks guys

Today I breadboarded a potential lfo to wobble the vco.

Here's the lfo
Works great so far just flashing an led.

I'm thinking of using an cd4046 vco like the one here

Vcf too...... hmmm
I'm thinking of housing in a wooden box so lots of mod ideas welcome Jim.

Now I'm go read some more thanks intripped.

And thanks to Eric too.

Well I've got something working now with the lfo from my last post and a 555 timer vco.
It's the one and only 555 chip I've owned.
I've had it for years, almost since I started this hobby.
I dug it out of my really old parts bin (Desk shelf at eye level in a baggy)
the other day. Put it somewhere safe.
It took me two hours to find it tonight. It was In my new IC parts bin. Doh

Anyway I made my first synth. It's gonna need some fine tuning.

VCO from IC2 here.

I know that feeling.  In the month or so leading up to my wedding, I had put my wedding ring "somewhere safe."  :icon_rolleyes: Luckily, I did eventually find it before the wedding day.

Technical difficulties.  Please stand by.

The refining is going good.
This is fun.
But very loud.

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

Kipper4

The mute was a happy accident.
I need a more elegant solution and effective.
Ideally I'd like to be able to mute the output but leave the chip running.
So as I can listen to the output through headphones and only allow the output to the mixer/amp input upon release of the momentary switch.

The mono headphones is another issue I need to resolve. Maybe some 1w small value series resistor

I'm considering an lfo (lm358) in the above schematic ic1 disconnect switch to the 555's cv input.

It could get messy.

Lots of room for boards and mods as it's gonna be a home made wood carcass with a metal lid. Is my thinking now.
Maybe an onboard delay with tails.

it sounds immensely annoying annoy annoy annoy annoy .....

one of your ramp diodes is backwards on yr dia. what do you mean by keep running - mute without reset? you could run the output into [and out thru] a bjt, and pull the base on/off slowish, to avoid messy clunks. or to add more badness to the sounds.
You hold the small basket while I strain the gnat.

Kipper4

True that. thanks Stephen. Well spotted.

The reset is so far the best mute.

There are still plenty of issues. Some have been ironed out.

Maybe I'll look into the jelly bean solution.

balkanizeyou

ahh, the 555 noise boxes!  :icon_cool:
So much fun to be had with them - for example, to get that slowly changing air-raid siren sound you could use a simple button controlled AR envelope generator in addition to the LFO for controlling the pitch.

CV input means that the possibilities of making annoying sounds are endless! You could for example use a 556 (two 555s in one package) and configure another half as a clock for the S&H CV generator like I did here for even more annoying random sounds!

Kipper4

Thanks I'll look the air raid shelter thing.

Appreciate the help.

Yep.  Can you believe that even Maplin has them for 39p??  I'm glad I was sitting down...   ::)    RS and Farnell too, and Bitsbox of course.

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...

anotherjim

I've had 555, 556, 7555 etc in stock for donkeys years - and never ever made anything with them. Some of them, I'm sure came from Maplin too.
It's probably one of the best choices for a noize maker. I mean, the 4046 has a ready to go VCO, but it's always 50% duty cycle square wave which I don't think is as interesting as something with duty cycle that depends on frequency.

Another RTG VCO is the LM567. Not very large CV range but timing cap waveform is useful if buffered.

Delay would be a real good addition. Think Silver Apples, Hawkwind etc... PT2399 of course.

CV pedal input? You can twiddle it while playing guitar. One thing with a 4046VCO is when CV gets close to 0v, it stops - maybe more controllable.

PWM maybe. Slow pwm can be a bit spooky all by itself.
