Just make every JFET layout as if you have an imaginary 4-lead JFET with pinout D-S-G-D.  Then you can put any JFET in once you know its actual pinout, without bending any leads in awkward directions.

I would normally only do this with vero  builds, but here is an example of a PCB:

I also asked the designer to add SMT pads for ultimate versatility (because why not  :icon_razz:).
Excessive? Yes. But, I like it.

i finally built this eric, the rully wow matcher? thanks once again!
but....

i STILL f'n hate f'n jfets lol

I love the horrid variability of the specs of FETs... makes it a crapshoot if something is going to work properly or not.

Are you a gambler, son?  :icon_rolleyes:

i wanna phaser that doesn't use these suckers!!! lol

i think transconductance phasers like rick's causality sound better ... chewier, more vocal.

i despise having to tune a damn circuit to each one of these suckers, or worse, if ya need, say,

40 of 'em for a tau phaser or something... <which i gotta board for lol>

No, the board I showed is actually the second prototype version of a distortion circuit I'm designing.
I haven't even built it yet.  :icon_lol:
(I had JFET scarcity, not matching, in mind when I asked for it to be laid out this way -- but, mostly it was for fun, as a way to preserve the idea.)

Ok, I see what you are saying now...

The rullywow matcher uses the same pinout trick, but in a test socket context.  I thought you were trying to tell me that you somehow built my distortion circuit.  :icon_lol: I need more sleep.

Looks like the Gristleizer is getting popular again. Time to quickly plug my terrible Vero layout if anyone's interested...

i was looking at that bro... shit, i think i surfed your site looking for a build doc even. i dig your site!! one of these days gonna try a couple of your projects, i'm just too lazy to vero and too cheap to buy right now ;)

Thanks man! Appreciate it! And yeah, I struggle to motivate myself to vero anything other than simple fuzzes these days. Once you start fabbing boards, it's hard to go back...

i'm gonna force myself to do a veroboard clone theory just cuz i was an idiot and gave the original one away to an unappreciative asshat lol... one of my first builds, and it even worked. couldn't believe it. but generally, if anything has chips n stuff on it i beg dino or phil to work me up a board, cuz them two guys are ace.

i look forward to trying the ringmodulated delay you came up with. it sounds incredible.

i hope to one of these days figure out how to use some of the preamp stuff in a 2399 to make a fuzz with a one-slap double. seems like it should be doable, but honestly, outside of fuzzboxes, i'm at best still a monkey with a breadboard, a 10-toed opposable thumb'd freak of nature ;)

btw, left a comment on your blog bluff yesterday i think it was, i REALLY dug the song you used that warped chorus on. for an old hippy like me to dig it means a lot more (to me) than ya probably think.. good arrangement, lyrics, production, the whole vibe was a-ok. groovier than peachy-keen ;)

Wow, thanks buddy! I'll be sharing the schematic for it very soon. Just ironing out some noisy whistling but it's nearly there.

Also - you really need to try the Noise Ensemble - low part count PT2399 fuzz - awesome machine!

It was one of the first I breadboarded that worked first time, amazing fun. I took some elements of it to make a pedal which I sold too:

Let me know if you want a version 1 Hyper Light board, I have a bunch left!

Very interesting because that distortion PCB I showed a piece of earlier was actually part of a prize I won for building a veroboard Clone Theory.  And, in that build I did have to bend a JFET lead in an awkward way to match the layout.  Fun coincidences.

I used this layout (plus two cap corrections from Scruffie):

i got my own layout i did of the morroccotopo one. its really more of a tricked out small clone i think. i have scruffie's on my live board in fact, love it.

but the one on vero has a whole other vibe. i shoulda never gave it to the guy i gave it to, but i was being too damn nice again ;)
