Burns Buzzaround has a weird attack effect - how?

So I've breadboarded a Burns Buzzaround - pretty standard 3 Ge transistor fuzz. I made a couple of subs but it's very close to the original. But I have a strange attack effect - the volume fades in. Does anyone know how this has happened?

I have

Q1. AC128 - not metered
Q2. OC72 hfe43, VF 234mV
Q3. OC77 hfe73, VF 215mV

Video for reference!

I know this circuit isn't supposed to be super susceptible to hfe ranges, but I've tried a bunch in mine, and it definitely doesn't like super low hfe ..   q1 I did like 75 ish q2 85ish and then q3 over 100, I think it was 115.  YMMV

Thanks - the image I found recommended something like 50 for Q1&2, and around 78 for Q3, which all seemed pretty low to me. Strange.

Ac128's are typically pretty high hfe.. I don't think I have one under 75..  may be try that one in q3 and swap the rest back one slot hehe  :icon_mrgreen:

sounds to me like you're driving the first stage into cutoff, and then its fading in. that's kinda cool, like adding the a leo fuzz to a fuzzface, and you get similar to the old prescription electronics swell fuzz, i forget its name.

i'd either try another q, or keep that one and put it on a switch with another so you can choose which attack ya prefer ;)

OK, looks like I had every transistor round the wrong way!
Now we know :)
