Inspired by Chia Pets ("the pottery that grows", for those of you unfamiliar with this cheesy concept: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chia_Pet), I decided to attempt to make a parody in guitar pedal form.
I've posted this idea in a couple other threads, but the idea has grown (figuratively speaking) enough to be repotted here.

Attempt number one was mostly a failure, but nonetheless a learning experience:

I had simply attached the seeds directly to the painted enclosure, and they didn't stay moist enough to sprout, except for the ones at the bottom.

My next attempt will utilize this card substrate, following a suggestion from duck_arse:
the idea being to sprout the seeds on this first, then attach it to the pedal.

Stay tuned.   :icon_razz:

Edit:  By the way, the reason I linked to the Wikipedia page and not the actual Chia Pets website is because the latter is filled with truly nightmarish creations that you can't unsee.  :icon_eek:

Looks like Pauly Shore in Encino Man. lol.

Floor-mat at the front entrance to my former place of employment. Oh... the irony.

maybe mix some mud with crazy glue, spread it all over the enclosure, then add seeds? lol

It might look ok, but it wouldn't hold enough moisture to keep the plants alive.

i went through a phase of growing mushrooms years ago. you could easily get a fungus mycelium to colonise some substrate on the enclosure, within days, but it'd run out of nutrients and water. here's a fun fact with some relevance here: some fungi will eat aluminium. no clue if they like zinc.

i wonder if it'd be possible to grow anything and dessicate it without too much visual deterioration, so you could coat it in resin. that's probably a question for the DIY jewellery crowd.

Chia seeds make their own hagfish slime.  It was the marketing folks who changed the name from slimeseed to chia.   :icon_razz:

A weird update of sorts (ok, there is nothing not weird about this project):

Remember that previous failed attempt where the seeds at the bottom edge of the enclosure were the only ones to sprout?  Well, I kept those growing for shits and giggles while I prepare for my next attempt.

It is surprisingly lush.

here's a question - what, exactly, is chia for? is it for eating? toupees?

People eat the seeds, or make weird beverages out of them (I consider all smoothies to be weird, but there are some even weirder chia-based beverages out there).  Not sure if the plants are edible.  Probably.

There I go, using that word "weird" again.  :icon_lol:
