Does anyone have an opinion on whether there is an industry standard for (single digit) 7-segment display packages? I see LOTS of different package sizes on the suppliers search terms. I'd have thought by now there would be a couple of 'most common' package sizes that people use?? Is there a jellybean for this sort of thing, one that is most widely available and least likely to go obsolete?

The ones I remember fitted in standard DIL sockets if you wanted. Probably 14 pin. I always thought that was a standard. There were also smaller multi-digit calculator sizes that fitted in a DIL socket sideways. In fact, there are angled DIL sockets for mounting displays on pcb edges at 90deg.
That said, as they got larger, they put the pins in rows at top & bottom, which is also more breadboard friendly. Probably still 0.1" pitch.
So if the pins are spaced 0.1" along in 2 rows 0.3" apart - they are standard singles?
