How important are transformer specs in frequency doubler/octave up pedals?

Hi there

I'm in the middle of making a couple of different octave fuzzes, particularly a Death By Audio White Business Card Fuzz (essentially a slightly modified Octave Clang). Other circuits yet like the Tycobrahe octave fuzz uses a transformer as well, but a different one.

In seeking to understand how the circuit works and finding equivalents for discontinued/unavailable transformers, I'm interested in the importance of the specs of the transformers used... I can only find descriptions of how the octave up stage works (like this one: https://sites.google.com/a/davidmorrin.com/www/home/trouble/troubleeffects/fuzz/fuzz-topologies/transformer-diode-octave). How important is primary and secondary impedance of a transformer in such a circuit? Is it dependant on the stages before it or does it affect the nature of the frequency doubling?
