How do you add more distortion to a circuit? is it possible?

I have a pedal i like and it has no eq section (black magic by love pedal)..so i added a eq section then I got a volume drop after tone stackso i built a few booster sections to test out adding volume back..but now when the distortion is on max its just starting to get good ..is there a way to add another clipping section? I have been looking at a bunch of sites and most of it is to technical for me right now..in my newbie brain i am thinking hey why not add diode clipping and double up the amount of distortion? well my searches for that failed too. anyone have any thoughts about this? I am going to do some testing today and see if any part changes make it better..maybe use a cap box and try different size caps ..  :icon_wink:

You had plenty of distortion before you added the eq?  I would expect you did.  Can you draw up what you added and where?

Make R2 smaller/lower (e.g., 100k) and stick a pair of back-to-back red LEDs*** in parallel with R4.  That oughta get you more filth.

***One goes to ground in one direction and the other goes to ground in the reverse direction.

I agree with this. It might be just as simple as adding a simple boost stage in front.

i just tested that and both leds are firing up sounds good..only now the eq is not working? hmmm
eg section is from boss hyper fuzz...maybe a different eq? I think my favorite right now is the "skinwalker dead astronaut " and boss fz2 hyper fuzz...ideally would like to have mid control too ..anyone think they might have a better idea for eq please let me know...thanks man!

forgot to mention this modification by antonis was done prior to this post...worked good too..
Delete 22k (R4), make 470k (R2) 1k or so, delete 500k Volume pot, connect a 10k pot on pin 3 for Volume setting

garcho

Why is there a 470kΩ resistor in series with the output?

EDIT: never mind, good you changed that value

are you talking about the input section? front stage? where would you insert this? i will test it out...thanks J

I presume both Blackie & Steben refer on EQ loss boosting..

On the other thread (concering boosters) I suggested you a Boooster with variable gain..
Of course, there are many boosters with also variable gain simpler than the one proposed..) :icon_wink:

I should reccomend the use of any booster with gain higher than just EQ loss recovery..
"I'm getting older while being taught all the time" Solon the Athenian..
"I don't mind  being taught all the time but I do mind a lot getting old" Antonis the Thessalonian..

Yes, or even without the 22µF decoupling cap at the 1k source resistor. That would give less gain. The tone stack might take less away than a full gain boost stage like this adds....
Or just go for Antonis' idea for a variable gain stage, which can be done by adding a pot in series with the cap.

Yes.. the right one is there for stabilizing VB..
It's a usual implementation for the "unused" amp of a dual op-amp..
(in the mean of both single and dual op-amps take equal board space..) :icon_wink:

But first try JFET booster posted above with variable Gain..

on the jfet boost what is value c1 and c2  100nf?

and on the other one where do pins 4 and 8 connect? or left unconnected?

so far i have had no luck with either one..
thanks

garcho

the 386 has a low input impedance, you might want to stick a buffer in front of it too

Pin 4 to GND and pin 8 to Power Supply..
(like any standard DIP8 dual op-amp)

IC1A & IC1B are incorporated into a single device, so the don't need individual power supplies..

That's what i thought too..but when i tested it it didn't work..(pin 4&8) i was getting tired and so i stopped....will get back to it tomorrow..thanks for all you help! are you really in Greece? that is so cool!! Jim
