Toshiba 2SK880 is the same as the 2SK209, in slightly smaller SC-70 package.

Both are the same part as the 2SK117, which is itself similar to 2SK170. (Not quite as low-noise as the 170, but less capacitance, which is good for condenser mic use.)

Check the datasheets, maybe he's right.
