A suggestion for some of you out there

When EHX released the Hot Foot controller in the late '70s, one of the "killer apps" for the unit was controlling the delay time of one's Memory Man pedal.  If you quickly increased the delay time using your foot, the pitch would suddenly drop.  If you set the unit for maximum delay and quickly reduced the delay time, you'd quickly shift the pitch higher.  Both were the result of clocking the sampled signal out at a different rate than it had been sampled in.  In effect, it predated the Digitech Whammy pedal by several decades, albeit in a more limited fashion.

So, it you have a spare wah or volume-pedal shell, AND a simple delay that can be installed or rehoused in the shell, with a suitable pot resistance, consider throwing together a primitive homebrew Whammy.

Oh bollocks. I mean, erm, thanks Mark!

I've just recently had a local guy talk me into building him a delay in a crybaby Shell. I had barely even grudgingly agreed (against all better judgement) when a delivery guy appeared at my door with a Crybaby.

I really hope he doesn't see this.

I will however bookmark this for future reference. Early experiments have actually been quite fun.

Edit: here's a few of the early videos I sent to him, I thought it was more of a side effect of the PT2399 (Keeley Magnetic Echo) but there's a definite pitch shift when I had the delay time wired to the wah lever.

I guess I should add that deliberate pitch shifting to mimic a Whammy would imply a) lifting the dry path (i.e., wet only), and b) reducing repeats such that all you hear is one variably delayed signal.  Of course, that doesn't mean that including repeats and clean signal could not yield musically useful sounds.  Just that if all one wants to do is shift the pitch of what you're playing, you'll want just one uncomplicated signal.

I'm sure PinkJimi showed this here a while ago using a cheap Danelectro PT2399 based effect.

That's great info, cheers! I'll have more of a play around.

Honestly never meant to sound like an arse with that post, im just a hack and have pretty limited knowledge on  mlstof these things. I'm waiting on the fella making a decision on which control he wants on the "wah" lever and we had almost narrowed it down to repeats or modulation speed. Seeing this thread gave me the fear that we'd reintroduce a third option again I'd never see the end of this daft project thats way beyond my skillset and knowledge.

I wouldn't doubt that one little bit.  I just wanted to nudge folks into trying it.
