Pink, what's your experience with the sound from these drivers? Is it normal for them to distort very easily? That's an issue I have even with tiny amps

Distortion in a talkbox signal chain is a good thing.  You're using your mouth as a resonant cavity to achieve subtractive synthesis - carving away unwanted harmonic content.  To do so effectively, and audibly, you need to start out with more harmonic content, in order to have something to remove.  Not "ugly" distortion, mind you.

> JBL D250-X driver.... ~40W tube amp

After listening to my Dad's Frampton Live album when I was a kid, I tried hooking up a mono earphone to my guitar amp and putting the earphone in my mouth. Boy was that a hot mistake!

I did the same in about 1991. The earphone smoked quickly!  LOL

yeah they should distort fairly easily usually. the old ones i use usually have metal diaphragms that can really take some abuse. the distortion helps make consonant sounds. a "clean" talkbox is fairly meek, but a dirty one can really get squawkin'

long as it got enough nards, those will work. i have used them to do it. hard to supply enough power to it to really get much power out of 'em, but essentially that's the 44 magnum i use to drive mine with now.

I found a Hammond box size for this project.  1590V.

Big enough for this honkin' JBL driver?  Yep.

Big enough for the driver and a mono speaker jack?  Yep.

Big enough for the driver, jack, and a (cap/no cap) toggle switch?  Yeah, probably.

Big enough for the driver, jack, toggle, and this massive crossover cap?  Uh...maybe.  Hard to tell without one in hand.

pinkjimiphoton

remember, the cap isn't all that important, and doesn't need to be particularly high voltage or large if you choose to use one.

cool box, i may get one for mine in fact! thanks bro

The driver fit in the Hammond 1590V with a couple mm to spare all around, lol.  Plenty of spare height for the cap and everything.  I have some stiff styrofoam bits supporting the driver from underneath, might cut a dowel.  The hose adapter thing is a 3-D printed piece from Ebay.

Thanks.  I'll probably relabel "Cap<>Bypass" to "HPF<>Bypass" just because.  It's a very audible difference FWIW, I think most would prefer the sound without the cap.

pinkjimiphoton

like i said, you don't need a cap. the cap limits the lows. only necessary with midrange drivers or tweeters. that's why the old-school full range pa horns are best.
