that is a thermal cutout. the trannie gets hot, the solder goes soft, the spring pulls the neutral, and the owner is killed when he looks inside to see what has happened.

Yeah, bit of an eye opener.  Not sure what I would if I had such a beastie pass my way.   I'm sure I've seen something similar in the past.   I suppose these things start off with good intent but end up causing more safety issues than they fix.   The spring is a source of bad connections as well.
