You could use a linear colour organ for sound to light:



This gives a linear step of eight LED's for each colour and it is standalone - its input is a microphone, so there is no connection to the audio system but I don't hold out much hope for the lifespan of the batteries.  A wall wart should be a lot better.  I would probably grab some LM 3914/3915/3916 devices to simplify this design.  And op amps for the audio processing.
