How to protect my circuit from overpowering?

Hey all,

I've done a lot of repairs recently and have noticed most of them have been overpowered and replacing the Zener diode fixes them. How do I incorporate a protection diode like this in my everyday pedal circuits? I don't want to protect against reverse polarity, but rather overpowering. I've done a lot of digging but can't find any clear answers on how to do this.

Thanks everyone!

can you show us a circuit diagram for one of these repaired pedals, that we might see the zener in action?
don't make me draw another line.
